Cost of a Cannery Outfit. The following estimates by a person experienced in the canning business were prepared for the Lynchburg Virgi nian: The capacity of the fixtures herein des cribed is adapted to a small cannery. The boiler, with one kettle, would pre pare enough tomatoes etc., to fill 3,800 cans, or three times this number of pea ches or apples. Every additional kettle would proportionately increase the cape city. The cost of a boiler of twelve horse power is $220; kettle open, $17. This will do for tomatoes, apples peaches and all kinds of berries. It corn or peas are to be canned a pa tent process will be necessary. This will cost $125. With this kettle you will have a set of crates. Leaving out this, we have the follow ing additional items: Open kettles and crates, extra, coat $6 to dp; exhaust box, $17; crane to hoist erates out of the ket tie, $13; air pumps, $6; oil tank, $8 to $25; free pots, $8 to $10; lebow capping tools $2 each Two of these will be ne cessary for each man, but one "capper'Is sufaeient in a small cannery. The prices of cans, if they are bought at the right time are for two poundsanas $1.78 per hundred; for three pound cans $2.45 to $2 per hundred. The asesor boxes in which the cans are packed for shipment, and which hold two dosen eans, cost for cases that hold 24 two pounds cans, 7 cents each; for cases that hold 24 three pounds cans, 9 cents each. The price paid for shelling peas is 5 cents per gallon; for peeling tomatoes 1 cent per ucket, that is the common wooden bucket; for peeling and seeding hc 2 cents per bushel, peeling ap p dOabts per bushel. These are pri ces'e the hands are boarded at the cannery. If they board themselves 15 cents per day is allowed. The foregoing statement of expensesof starting a cannery nothing is said about a house to cover machinery and opera tions. This may be a very plain cheap shed, or a more costly building, or some old building may be adapted to the pur pose. A house with an area of floor equi valent to 24x40 feet would be sufltaent. Leaving out the cost of the house and the process kettle necessary if corn and peas are to be canned the sum of $325 will, I am informed cover the expenses of starting a cannery for tomatoes peaches and all kind of berries,-Southern Live Stock Journal. A Southern Romance, A special from Nashville, Tenn., Feb. II. says: A suit to recover a fourth in terest in an estate reckoned at $3000,000. filed in the Davidson country courts, a romance of unusual interest. Isaac Franklin was once the richest man in the south, owning four big plan tations and more negroes than any other slaveholder except General Wade Hamp ton's father. At his princely home he kept a visitors, register, and one day a party of young Nashville people on a frolic called and inscribed their names, Adeeclia Hayes, the then belle of the south, as one of these, and, careless of consequences, wrote opposite her name her intention of "setting her cap" for old man Franklin, The rich widower was cought in the trap and married imss Hayes. Franklin ason died, leaving a young a:d lovely widow worth i$.(10,000. Some timelater Joseph Aeklen, a young lawyer of Huntsville. Ala., proposed to a party of friends that if they would give bhim $1(000 for expenses he woul ensnare the wealthy widow. Aeklen was smart and handsome, and his friends provided him with the requisite cash. With a show of wealth Aeklen laid siege to the heart of Mrs. Franklin, and soon they were married. They built a country home called '"Rel mont" a superb plasee surrmounded by seventy-fve aermes of ornamented grounds with consenrvatories, mousle hall, billard pagoda and soololal garden, and enter taiLned regally. Aeklea died during the war, leaving four children, one of whom, Hon. Joseph H. Aeklen, formerly a member of con gress from Louiainas, is plaintiff in the suit spoken of. Mrs. Aeklen some time later married Dr. W. B. Cheatham of this ceity. Fifteen hundred invitations were issued, and many guests from Furope were present at the nuptials. After the war Mrs. C('heathem sued the government for $i,000,(N5 for damage t a cotton crop and won her cause. Her attorney was the confalederate Igeneral, Gideon J. Pillow, who was to receive $100,000 as his fee, but the widow dem arred and tbedemurrer was sustained. Since then the estate has wated away antil, when Mrs. Cheabmtham Iasealy died at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in *ew York, it was ,not estimated to be worth more thanu Sl0,, fr l a fear t I lterest in which yunn A-kelm brliagasJ.
