I., Sept. 18.- Miss Winnie I)avis, daughter of Mrs. Jefferson Davis, died at noon to-day at the Rockingham Hotel, to which place she came as a guest in the early part of the Pier's social season. She had been ill for several weeks, and at first her ailment was diagnosed as malarial gastritis. At times her condition become very serious, so that coisultij bf physicians were dooeemed necessiry, but frequent revivals gave renew ed hope that she would ultimately recover. During the past week especially has her condition been considered favorable, ulci it was thought that her removal frorn the hotel would be possible in a few dlays. The hotel had closed for the season, leavings the patient and at tendants practic'ally alone in the house. Last night, however, are lap;se in Miss Davis' condition was noted, anil throughout the night she lost strength. This morning the phlysicians said the end was not far off, atild at 0noon death came to end the suffering which at time was intense. Mrs. Davis had watched unre mittingly at her daughter's bed side, and she was bowed with sor row. The physicianms' report that she is holding up with great calmness in her altliction, and no fears are entertained that she will succumb to the strain. The )ceath of the Daughter of the Confederacy. Tho heart of the old South is growing old and weary; but this morning, when the headlines of the telegraph colnumns announced the death of Winnie Davis, that mighty but sonewhat benumbed heart was moved to a pang of grief antd many thousands of din, eyes that once gazed untlinchingly upon the tires of Bull Rim, Shiloh, Gettsbury and Cold Harbor were suffused v ith blinding tears. The daughlter of .IJeff Davis, the "Child of they Confederacy," the darling of every Southern veteran of the War Between the States, has pass ed from our midst. Within the last few clays cheering news had come to us from the bedside of the fair sufferer, that she was im proving; she had passed a restful night; there were hopes of her re covery. Alas! today she is dead. All that is mortal of Winnie Da vis is still with us to be entombed in the Southern soil she loved so deeply and loyally. But the vital spirit has fled, the sweet and gen tle, the noble and heroic spirit has gone to join her immortal father in the Halls of Valhalla, where rest the souls of those whom God hlimself has chosen for eternal glory.--States.
