According to the adeoubht recei ved from the sugar plantations, - preparations are being made to - still further increase the acreage devoted to sugar. This resolutions notwithstanding the fact that the past season has not been favors ble, shows that the planters are disposed to take a philosophical view of the results of theetnupaign just closed and to argue that the bad weather which led to the un favorable results during the pre sent winter is not likely to be again repeated, for the reason that no such meteorological conditions have prevailed for a decade prior to this winter. Speaking of the poor results of: the past season, it is but fair et, sany that the final ootturn has not been nearly so bad as was at titme I feared. It is true that the large - expected increase in the crop did not materialize; and it is also tree that the process of saving the crop was costlier than usual; but on the whole, the yield was, in the aggre gate, not so very much smaller S than last year, and prices ruled firm and sufficiently high to about offset losses. The determination to plant a - larger acreage the coming season attests the vitality of the Louisi sna sugar industry and the nerve of the planters in not permitting the annexation crass to dishearten them. They realise that if there is to be money in the sugar indu-s a try for the future, the larger the acreage the more economically can the crop be worked, and oonee queetly the bettes will be the gea. .end results. In connection with the probable increase of cane, the Louisiana Planter of Jan. 14 says; "The weather during the week has heon somewhat fickle and not in all re. spects suited to field Wrork, jet considerable of it is being done. It is expected that an increased acreage of cane will be planted, this feature of the industry hay ing been necessarily in October and Novemnber, when the seed cane question was determined. If the seed cane in windrows be found to have kept well we shall probably have an increased acreage planted, notwithstanding the adversee re suits of this season." The Louisiana sugar plansste - have always shown a high degree of courage in facing every adverre influence, hence it is not eurpris ing that they should now resolVe on a greater acreage than ever, in spite of the disappointmeats of last season and the possible dn. ger of territorial expension now confronting the country.
