Lfstts 9wtte The Gazette is informed that the authorities of St. Martin pueish p claim the right to collect taxes on the property of Mr. P. L. DeOlo. et and other oitizens living on the R east side of Vermillion bayou. We p understand that the action of t. Martin parish is based upon a toe cent act of the Legislature. Ow p4 ing to Mr. DeClouet's disienia. tion to yield to the demand of $t. Martin's tax-eellector, the mattet h has been submitted to the coe·tof that parish for adjustment. A considerable area of latd is involved in this controversy, which, if decided adversely to Lafayette, p will also entail the loss of a num p ber of worthy and desirable citie zens. w We believe the territory whioh St. Martin would like to have, is, by every prinaple of law and equi - ty, the property of Lafayette pa-I rish. We are reliably informed that in 1823, when this parish was carved out of St. Martin these lands were included within the borders of the new parish and they have been so considered from that time until very recently, The Gazette calls upon the Po lice Jury to leave nothing undone to assert the rights of the parish in this matter and not give up an inch of ground unless forced todo so. Through the laissez faire policy of a former administration this parish was hoodwinked oat of a large tract of land and it can illy. . aford to spare more territory to increase the revenues of other pa rishes. As it is, Lafayette is one of the smallest parishes in the 8tste and if this carving-out process contin nes, it will, in the course of times tf be an insignificant strip. ia We are not a lawyer) but it seema to us that the Legislature does not possess the power to take any por I tion of a parish and transfer it to another, without consulting the wishes of either.
