-The yield. of the crop of rice
which is now ibeing harvested is
extremely diaeppoidting to!the far
mer, and is quite a surprise 'to
those 'who 'thought 'they knew
something of the appearance of a
rice crop. Rice that was apparently
good, and .was estimated 'to yield
,18 to:20 seeks to the~acr, are giv
ing 10 ad 12, and in some splaces
less d 'that. The yield gener
ally is smdll, and we hardly think
thetthis year's crop'in this parish'
witll be much morebtihan half thati
of last year. In other sections of
the rice bett'the same result is re
ported which means an entirely
short crop, and in view of -this
fact, it might be well for our 'rice
planters to hold on to their rice
and not rush it to 'the market.
Under present conditions the rice
ought to-commend a 'better prise
than present quotations, and 'if
held, will surely have a tendency
to bigher the price. Mr. Henry
Ilot 'representing a Lake
Charles mill was here this week,
and bought several car loads. Al:
our rice should h#oldright here,
and the planters should 'make an
effort to interest the buyers 'to
come here and bid for their crop
instead of shipping to a market
where it gets-entirely out of their
control. and 'they stand at the"
mercy of brokers and claeeers who
make several grades and qualities
ofthbe same rice.
