This Year's Rice Crop.
This year's rice crop, it is ex
pected, will show a big loss. The
spring drouth almost paralysed
the hopes of many planters on so
count of the damage done to the
budding grain. Then the heavy
and frequent rains that have fal
len in the rice belt this fall have
greatly retarded the harvest of the
small part of the crop that was
left. It is said the crop will hard.
ly come up to the 8,000,000 mark.
When questioned regarding this
year's crop, 8. Locke Breas said:
"The further on we get into the
season the more it is being de
monstrated that this have been a
no-rise-crop year. This fall's con
tinned rains have made the prob
lem of saving the already inferior
crop a serious one. One would
imagine that with the undoubted,
as it now is, short crop pricese
would be up, but, on the coutrary,
the dealers and trade generally are
very sluggish in making any bids. I
This time last year all the mills
were running day and night, and
the dealers so busy you had to
make angagements ahead of time
to even talk to them.
"To-day a great many mills are I
closed down and others are run
ning on short time, while the dee
lers would rather joke with you
than talk rice. The crop will be
very small and of a very inferior j
quality. The rice territory is in
pretty good shape to stand this
year's losses. They have had fine
years of unquestioned prosperity.
"A great deal of harm is being
done in advertising the ripe in
dustry. It is set forth that Mr.
- made $8375 last year on
160 sacres of rice. Such was the
case. Mr. - did make 88875
on 160 acres of rice, but every man
can not do that. It takes equip- 4
ment and a knowledge of the busi
nees to make a sucoess of rice oul.

-The time of fire works has ar

grown children will indulge in
them quite freely, and some very

crackers, Roman candles and Bo

not to strike any one or to cases
