School House Demolished.
Monday evening while the rain
and thunder made this town look
sad and gloomy, when our streets
and side walks were Booded, when
the fre of lightning was seen in
every direction, the wind was
blowing but gently over this town.
At the same time that the peo
ple 'of St Martinville were discus.
ijug this unusual heavy rainfall
and the frequency of the strokes
of the fearful lightning, a tornado
was sweepilg over a small portion
of this parish, and leaving behind
it death and destruction.
The tornado sweept over that
section of Isidore Michell, and de
molished the large two story
school house, recently built by
Isidore Michel and the colored
people of that neighborhood, for
the private education of their ohil.
dren. This building was as fine
as oould be 'desired, it was large,
and' the promoters of this enter
prise' took a great deal of pride in
The school was in charge' of
rof. Adolph William, a bchool
teacher of 'log experience, and
'the attendance at that school was
between fifty and sixty pupils.
When.4he wind began to in
Crease Proftesor William heard
the building cracking, and hurried
the children down, as the school
was held' i the second story, just
as they reahed the lower floor
the building golapsed, with all the
chbildren and the Professor under
thbe mass of the'wrecked building,
one little girl was killed outright,
two other children were very seri
ously injured and about a dosen
received light wounds, all the
others escaped unhurt, and their
lives were saved by a piano that
had just been put in 'the school
The piano had been received the
same day, 'ad 'fearing the thres
teoing weather the piano was hur
riedry unloaded from the cart and
placed in the building near the
door, and when the children were
- hastening towards the door the
crash came, the piano which was
yet in its boxing tood there and
held the Imss of debris and saved
the children. Prof. Williams had
his arm broken in two places.
The destruction of this building
will be a great loss for the colored
'people who had built This fine
