Money In Peanuts. A farmer in Sabine Parish, La., writes that he planted peanuts on thin land that would not make over five barrels of corn to the acre and obtained 90 bushels of peanuts and 25 loads of hay, and then fat tened 15 head of hogs on the field at a gain of $99. He estimated that his return on the six acres was 8280, which was obtained at a cost for labor and seed of $16 25. This would indicate that there is pretty good money in peanut raising in this section, especially on the sanldy cut lands. It is probable, too, that his land was in better condition when his hogs were through searching it for stray peanuts than it was before it was planted. There is money in farming if it is done right, but the man must plant a little brains with his seed as this did.-Beaumont Enterprise For Sale-New surry at a bargain J. R. A bill has been introduced in the Territorial Legislature of New Mexico providing for the taxing of unmarried men, the money so obtained to be devoted to the sup port of unmarried women. It is proposed to require bache lors between the ages of 25 and 45 years to pay an annul tax of $10, whilt widowers between those ages are to, pay $25. It is a rather cn rious fact that the women of New Mlexico greatly outnumber the men. It has been the rule in all the F Lr Western States and Terri tories that the men outnumbered the women, but in New Mexico, by the census of 1900, three-fifths of the population were females and two-fifths males. It is not likely that the propos ed bill will become a law, but it would do good if it would force the men to marry the worthy wo men, but, on the other hand, if it should. result in causing the un married men to flee the country, it would do harm. Compulsory laws to regulate social relations are perhaps all unwise. Such matters are best regulated by social cus tome and individual tastes.-N. O. Picayune. Near Death In Big Pond. It was a thrilling experience to Mrs. Ida Soper to face death. "For years a severe lung trouble gave me intense suf fering," she writes, "and several times nearly caused my death. All remedies failed and doctors said I was incurable. Then Dr. King's New Discovery brought quick relief and a cure so permanent that have not been troubled in twelve years." Mrs. Soper lives in Big Pond, Pa. It works wonders in Coughs and Colds, Sore Lungs, Hemorrhages, La Grippe, Asthma, Croup, Whooping cough and all Bronchial affections. 50 and $1. Trial bottle free. Department of Agriculture has recently compiled the latest data secured from its correspon dents and agents throughout the country of the numbers and values of farm animals in the United States on January let, 1909. In this we find that the estimated number of farm horses was 2,064, 000, an increase over the previous year of 508,000 or 3.2 per cent. An interesting point brought out is that the value for horses reported from the whole country reaches $95.64 each, as against $93.31 the year before and as against $60.25 eleven years before. In regard to mules the data are slightly different. The estimated number of mules in the country is 4,053,000, as against 3,869,000 a year earlier, indicating an increase of 4.8 per cent. in the mule stock of the country. The average va lue of mules on January let was $107.84, practically the same, or $107.76, a year earlier, and as against $72.30 eleven years ago. -Commencing March 15th the dry goods stores will close at six o'clock every evening except Sa turdaye, which is an agreement of the merchants. This will give the proprietors and the clerks time for an outing every evening. Meat may be kept this way for mouths, or late into the warm weather: Grind, mix and season it, pack in two-quart jars that are perfectly clean and sweet. Bake for four hours in a moderately hot oven, take out and press with a heavy weight for twelve hours or over night; then take off the weight. There will be some fat on top but not enough to cover, so heat lard to the boiling point and pour over enough to cover. This excludes the air. Keep in a cool, dry place.
