But at different times we have called attention to the injury inflicted upon the State where there is exaggeration or misrepre sentation in such advertising. In that connecton the Lake Charles American - Press is de mnauding action by commercial ho (lies to put a stop to the exploita tion of certain Calcasieu lands the value of which, it claims, is being absurdly magnified. These lands are located in the vicinity of the 'Union Sulphur Company's proper ty whose production of sulphur anmounts to millions of dollars an nually, andt the bait offered to prospective is that drilling on these lands will probably disclose similar deposits of sulphur. The American-Press claim that these lands are divided into lots and offered for sale at the rate of $400 an acre, whereas, they never commanded an average price of $'5 an acre, and that all the evi dence is to the efftect that they contain no sulphur. It points out that the unique deposite being nmined by the Union Suiphur Company is not found over an aera of four thou sand acres, as represented in some of the literature sent out but is contained within forty acres, en closed by four thousand acres of land worth but a few dollars an acre. The company itself has tes ted from time to time the four thousand acres, but has never found sulphur anywhere except on the forty-acre tract, thus demon strating that the deposit it own constitute a geographical freak un known at any other spot on earth. It may be that the American Press itself has been imposed up on. The sulphur company natu rally would have a selfish interest in discouraging prospecting in the vicinity of its holdings if it had reason to believe that its plot was not a geological freak. But, be that as it may the American-Press is justified in protesting against the advertising abroad of the pos sibilities of the lands if there is no ground for the alluring hops held out to those who are asked to buy. Louisiana has suffered consider ably from the operations of land syndicate happily very few, who glittering promlises to home seek ers which couhl not be fulfilled. )ther States have had similar ex iperiences. Any mnovmient to re strict such misrepresentations ought to wbe encouragedl. So much can truthfully hie said of thie great fertility of our lands and even of our mineral resources that there is no need to propagate falsehooxs concerning them.--States.
