N. O. HEALTH OFFICIALS RESIGN. eI Dr. S. R. Oliphant, president, and all the appointees of the gov ernor on the Board of Health of the city of New Orleans have ten- & dered their resignations to the Cl Executive. As by request these n resignations were accepted at once. Only three of the board remain, I and these are the appointees of the mayor, who has been requested to P ask for their withdrawal. This is a movement in the right direction, and was the result of a movement of the business interests of the Cresent City. That these gentlemen were in competent, that they pandered to the whims of over-frightened people in the last yellow fever scare nearly all cool-thinking peo ple believe. There is no telling how much this Board of Health cost the city of New Orleans and the State at large by their lack of firmness; .we dislike to say their lack of medical skill and knowledge. Since the business interests have taken such a firm stand in the mat ter His Excellency has hastened to assure them that he is in accord with the movement. Oh, yes; a politician in all things. Were not the appointments made upon the basis of factional assistance in the first place ? To everyone, not blinded by political love and fealty to the cause of Fosterism, it was clear that President Oliphant was woefully deficient in the great crisis which confronted New Or leans and the State of Lousiana. The City Item deserves much credit for this work and we under stand it has been strongly com mended by business men gen erally. CIRCUS IN ARGENTA. Hummel Hamilton & Sells Make a Hit on the South Side. Argenta people attended the cir cus in large numbers this after noon and indications are that there will be an immense crowd there to-night. Hummel, Hamilton & Sells have made a popular hit in Little Rock, and undoubtedly many people from this side of the river will pay them a visit to Ar genta. Last night here on this side there was another tremendous crowd at the circus, and the audi ence was a most enthusiastic one. The many expressions of delight were spontaneous, and the splen did performance made a big hit, as it deserved to. The clowns were the delight of the colored population, and their antics kept the "'black section" in hysterical roars of laughter throughout the evening. Should Hummel Hamiilton & Sells ever come this way again they are assured of a warm wel come; and they deserve it, as no better, more entertaining, cleaner or perfect circus ever exhibited in Little Rck. The absence of all faktrs. short change grafters and the usual riff raff of a circus was noticeable and commented on most favorably. SIt is a moral show; its owners and ~rsanage're are gentlemen, and its employes. evetn t tile hio lllest arTvassrlltanil , tiare (touitit eu ti- 1 -1 p lite, and ulltiring in thi'tr e'trti. tU" promote the, ct',loilort iti patr:UT s. utl'elt. ss t Io i ot111 . ni.,1ti, ; ' & ' e l l s ij I , \ \, 'w s 'h ' ( ' }th i ) e { l - . i crat."
