ANDREW CURRIE as a candidate for Railroad Commission er from this district, subject to the will and action of the I)emocraic party. * * To The Progress. Prompted by what I conceive to be a reasonable ambition I desire to announce myself as candidate for Railroad Corn missioner from this district, subject en tirely to the action of the Democratic pr-ty. L. E. THoMAs. The time to fight, is when the war is in progress. Our primary elections are still open. Even the noviciate now knows what this means. We begin to apprehend more and more that the United States is spending anormous sums of money and sacrificing many pre cious lives, in the sole interest of a lot of shiftless citizens and skulking guerrillas. The Sunday law was not repeal ed. Now-without regard to the past-let every body make up their minds to observe it. Senator Barret's bill (which be came a law) to prevent, or circum scribe the sale of cocaine, is a splendid measure. Few of our good women and men appreciate the terrible magnitude which the sale of this deadly drug has reach ed in this city: nor the datnlermus, murderous in1liations whlic'h its use aro,)uses in the 1)b: , nI (of its victims. c TFhe saloon man--l), publi( (cha.(ge-has many sins to answer I for. And many of these he is not 1 guilty of at all. I'lThe coyote is always 1)01(1 enough to bark at the caged lion. 1 The mosquito is certainly octn- t pying a very prominlent position I in the public mind just now. AnI it seems to us that some ambitious young nme, aire trying to (aetch the public's eye by s(mi-similar methods. To judge by their conversation, and conduct, one could believe that sonic people have determined to go to hell; just to spight some church members whom these lirst referred to, have decided are hyp oerites. Soon the candidates for Alder- N men at large, for Greater Shreve- t port, vN ill b singing their lulla bies to the children, and their love songs to the city sufYragans. e The re)ports give glowing ac counts of the bravery of General I Garcia's forces in Santiag). It is said that with intrepid mien they i hurl themselves upon the proviý ions furnished by-our government, and with the same dare-devil val or would ransack and loot a town I --after Sbalfner's American b. ys had subjugated it, and the Span ish soldiers cad surrendered. We are apprehensive that Gan eral Nelson A. Miles (Commander in-Chief of the United States Ar my, by an unfortunate accident) pays far more attention to sittings for his photographs to be taken, than he does to the Spanish war. HIOW DO THEY STAND? It would be well for the people of the Fourth Congressional Dis trict to inquire diligently of the candidates for Congress, how they stand on the silver question. This District is uneqnivocal in its posi tion on this great question. No min can get the nomination for Congress, from the Dm' cratic party, who does not favor the free and unlimited coinage of silver in the ratio of 16 to 1 with gold; by theUnilted States, and regardless of the action of any other Nation. Thus far, The Proffress knows only two candidates. These are Judge E. W. Sutherlin and Hen. Phanor Brezeale. We know the Judge's position thereon. He is safe, sound and solid as a rock. Judge Sutherlin was in the city last week and we talked with him , ont the suij0clt. \\' ." . please1 to)liti timl, ,, l 't ' ( )t ! .
