JNO. DICKINSOlN, Editor and PrToprieto. Thursday, - - May 2, 1861. Job Work must be paid for on de livery. AGIENTS. Mr. JoHu W. TABER, is our authorized agent in Natchitoches. Mr. D. D. O'BRIEN, No. 6, Exchange Place, New Orleans, is our authorized Agent for that city. Those friendly to our undertaking, who may hear of any local, or other items, that will prove of interest to our readers, will favor us by handing in the saute at the office of the News. We will be pleased to receive contribu tions from our friends, in and around Shreve jport. An occasional article from our planters, relative to the crops, will be very auceptablec. In fact, we desire correspondence from every sdction of the States. Personld articles will not be published, citheras comznunications or ad\vertisctllnts. P-> Postmasters are reqlested to act as agentts, for the ANewx, iand re tatn tenper centfrom amwount torwarderI. As we are going to press we learn that the steamers Emma and Capt. Lane, bound from St. Louis to the Indian nation, laden with corn, are undergoing a search by our authorit ies. In a late issue of our paper, we a.dvised caution abnut the use of our cannon by inexperienced person,; it was not heeded, and the consequence is a fatal accident. Let it hIer.eafterhe kept in some secure place, where everv pers:;n anxious to discharge it, will not be able to get at it, unless, he or they be experienced gunners; and, even then, consent should be requisite io the part of the owner; he using discretion in loaning it. If this pre caution is heeded, there will be no nmore accidents from this source. The Caddo Rifles, at last accounts, were encamped at the barracks, be low the city of New Orleans. It is supposed that they will be attached to a regiment, now ;,rmning, and that the Colonelcy will be tendered to Capt. Shivers. Now is the Time! We publish in to-day's paper, a call by Capt. A. G. Dickinson, fur volunteers, to enlist for 12 months' :~ervice in the Confederate States army. Capt. D. is an old business man, well known in our coinnmunity. lie wishes to form a company of 125 men, to start immnediately for New irleans; he has resigned a high posi ion in New Orleans for this purpose, ;and has been kindly aided by the merchants of that place to accomplish this object. Capt. D. informs us that parties unable to furnish their uni trmns, will get the same from him gratis, as he has them on hand. Let ail the patriotic persons who wish to enlist under a good Captain, repair at once to Jeffe.rson or the citr of Shreve port, and enlist. The Captain is count enanced by our Governor, and his comp:::ny will be entertained and supported in Nev.; Orleans, until called into service. Let there be no hesitation ; for with or without money, if your hearts are proud and true, you will be equip ped and properly carpd fot by Capt. Dickinson. The Capt. wishes to leave Jefficrson as soon as possible, say six days, and will call at Slreveport on his way down for I recruits. All persons wishling to enlist can call at T. lL Morris' D)rug store, where they will I, enrolled by the titlh inst. The river at this point continues to fall slowly. Our planters give us I flattering accounts of their prospects ' thus far. During yesterday evening Ii we were visited by a light rain. I Lt as irepare, From the various accounts whic] come under our observation; ther -must soon be a bursting of the con fined war clement, it cannot mudl Slonger continue as it is, for some thing must be done. We are comn paratively speaking perfectly igno rant of what is going on abroad, for as we stated in a previous number o d our paper, one day we receive start c ling or favorable intelligence rela d tive to the doings and sayings of out government, or thle Federal Governl a ment, and the very next announce 1 ment, is a contradiction of the same a For instance, the resignation ofGen Scott, is intimated, then confirmed - and afterward we are told tlheir is no -truth in it at iall. IIow are we tc know then, wlhat is actually trans. piring. The only wav is, to conpar. the different reports, anid draw or own conclusions from them. If we are going to have a war tile sooner it conunences tie better, ftr las it now stainds, we are all stufi'rini, pecuniarily, and many will li im loverishied. Ve have hI.,.n attack edl, and not very fthr off, as will hie S•eeni by our publisihed rel'ort ,f yes terdav. Long live ir Virginia. The confirmation of the Virginia - events nearly crazed the people of this city. Cannon were fired, bells rung, drums heat, and bugles sounded. .Such commotion was never lefore witnessed in this hospitable, sedate town. 0 Much excitement was created in the o Confederate army to-day, while the batteries were annoutncing thl,' t eces sion of Virginia. Fort Fickens. which lies directly opposite, was in a r ferment. The drums beat to al ins, and soon every gunner was at his polst, Sand every soldier in line.
