The promptness of the mili tary and civilians prevented the flames from spreading, and the tire was soon extinguished without any serious damage. We are requested to say that Mr. Anthony will deliver a Lecture on Revelation, for the benefit of the Soldiers' Home at Shreveport. Judging from what we witnessed last Monday night, the guard-house at this Post must be a popular re sort. Officers of all grades, citizens, &c., (the latter includes editors) with out passes, were politely invited to call at the reci lnce of the officer of the guard to partake of his hospi tality. Having a previous engage ment, it is more than probablethat we the local, should not have accepted the invitation, had It not been for sundry individuals, " armed and equipped as the law direct," who in sisted that our presence was actually necessary at the aforesaid residence. Of course, then, we accepted the in vitation, and were very politely es corted to the scene of entertainment. We will say nothing of what happen ed afterwards, but would respectfully suggest to our late host, that lhm- ex tend to us no further courtcsies. In this issue of our paper appe1arss the name of our friend, Maj. S. 1). t Ul liver, as a candidate for the office ,t State Treasurer. The Major is well and favorably known in this section. and is in every respect worthy of tih position. The name of our friend Col. Ro, Burke also appears. Both are triends of ours, gentlemen, and fully capable. It was rumored on the streets day before yesterday, that a gentleman just from Alexandria had seen the N. Times of the 29th, but nothing was said in regard to the reported battle of the 23d. It looks to us like another false alarm. We are indebted to Lieut. Connected with th:i j,.,ect, there is a natural, proper S.ul t.lit aost universal purpose to pre ti.r t, all public positions, those who ithave Iperformed good service in the No better selection can be made than l of Col. Burke. At the commencement of the war, ih. went as Lieutenant in Capt. Wm. I1. Levy's company, from Natchi t chlrv, La., the 2d La. Reg't of In ft:ntrv. Was elected Captain upon i re-organization; was re-elected. c:aptain; did gallant service in Vir .,iian; was badly wounded at Gettya I:rl,,-plrobably for life; is now Col. 2,"i La. Infantry. But in consequence it hli wounds, is recommended by tiedlical board for retirement, to give place to junior officers for promotion. S ,I.ly. so noble a soldier deserves tit. :p,lreciation a.ad reward of the S,,.,pl,. lI ,,ire the war his business was Sc,lii iinrciai, and he brought to its 1,ui-.tit untiring energy, irreproacha h il integrity and rare intelligence. II is. thoroughly qualified, and a I courttous, genial gentleman; a gal-. lant sohlier-devoted mind and body rt to our cause-and we hope he will ibe elected next Treasurer of the State. M.
