SMr. Josephus Daniels, of Raleigh, I . C., was here last Mondlay. the guest of the Hon. Andrew Price. M r. Price entertained him and Mr. T. A. Badeaux, Sheriff Beary andlI Judge Caillouet, who were invited to meet the distinguished visitor, at dinner at the Empire House. Mr. Daniels is the proprietor of the Raleigh News, the leading Demo cratic paper of North Carolina, which is now engaged in the ardent advoca Scy of the adoption of the Louisiana suffiage clause by the people of his State, and he came to Louisiana to familiarize himself with the subject I in its prac*tical bearings. C Yesterday morning about 4 o'c'ock a fire was discovered in the pantry of Mrs. Justitien Foret's residence on t Jackson street. An alarm was turn c ed ir., and the firemen quickly res- a ponded. The fire was extit guished I but not until after the pantry w a destroyed with its contents. The r indications are that the fire had been I burning inside the room for a con- a stderable time before it was disco vered. Fortunately the house to which the pantry was attached was of brick; a otherwise the damage might have v been much more serious.
