Roman and American Im perialism. We are told that the people of this country would never permit" this republic to be changed nloto an em pire. So thought the Romans upon whose republic the sun rose and set for 550 years, and who lost their liberty through intu.ences very simi. lar to those now in operation in thi, country. After conquering GOol, Caesar returned with his victorious legions and trainllhxd upon the liber. ties of his country. But war and conquest had already centralized the government and corrupted and ener. vated the people, and Rome was virtually an empire years before she began that long line of emperors, among whom were some of the vtilest human monsters that ever lived. That proud and mighty empire e dured nearly 500 years. The room was on fire, and at the window stood a fair and lovely creature. Frantic with horror, he pushed through the people and called upoli the firemen to save her. "Stand back 1" roared a policeman. forcing him back into the crowd again. "Stand back I" shouted the man; "and see a lovely creature perish before my eyes ?" To his disgust the crowd gazed on in apathy. "Wretches I" he shrieked, pointing to the poor lady at tte window, 'aret you blind ?" And with a mad rush he dasled uill the stairs, had seised the lady roui d the waist, and had iorne her to the outer air in few seconds. His agitation and the heat caused him to nearly faint, but he had just enough strength to place her In the army of a policeman amid the shouts of the crowd. But, good gracious! What was that ? lild his ears deceive him? Instead of great cheers for him, a tremendous roar of laughter greeted his heroic act I He glanced at the lady he had rescued from a fiery fate, aid the reason of their mirth was at once apparet, and amid the laughter of the unsympathetic crowd he fled.
