Miss Ruth A. 3lelanson , & then appointed, but, the loos of her msothsr caused her to resign aft. r hmaebnng two mouths. After some edtrt, we succeeded in securing the services of Miss Adllena Lobraio, from New Orleans, a No. mar sch uol graduate, who has tuight for the s.ainiing mouths of the session. jsrollment: boys 23, girls 22, total, 45 Attendance: I.oys, 1. girls, 1t, altl, 32. There is need of a goout school building at Bayou Hioeuf, and Its Board has asleady promised to build as soon as its funds will permit. jest is now being paid for th tcm psrary building which is used as a gebool house. BEIRERON SCHIOOL Is the immediate vicinity of La Joarche Crossing. Miss Sal y Beatty, a first grade teacher had charge of the Beegeron School this session. This school is established in a build tag that belongs to the Board, and is stuated in a very small lot, affording pset scant loom for a platy.gronnil. t is in proximity to a residence in the adjoining yard. There are glazed ashes in the windows and wooden shutters. Bli'ds would be an im. lfovement. A new roof was recent ly provided. A ceIling overhead would facilitate the work of the hea tar to ftu nish sufficient warmth fo: he comofort of the teacher and pupils. Jarollment: Bo13s, 16. girls. 17, tatal, 33. Attendance: 10 boys, 10 jirls, total, 20. BENOIT SCuOOL. On a site given by Mr. Adolphe aPelletier. In the Chachey Settlement stands a school house, whi'l was erected by the School Board a few years ago. It attracts attention at eaoe, from the fact that the building ht whitewashed and the blinds are p!inted, hnd the fence is neatly kept. ir. A. I. Cou'on is the teacher. b'bere is a ceiling to the house and an excellent floor, making a comfortable school house. Eurollment: 15 boys, 19 girls, total, 34. Attenda.bce: 10 boys, 16 girls, total, 26. BILLIC Scitoor.. LI the open fleld,on the upper edge Abbey Plantation stands a shabby, dilapidated building. looking worse than many a cabin, with a padlock sad chalin to clo'e the door. In this hilding, which is without a ceiling, dad it has large holes in the walls, rs. Mary Davis has been doing her duty to the children entrusted to charge. By courtesy only, we call this building a school house. I hardly susceptible of repairs, and beat plan would be to erect a new hililing to accommodate the people the vicinity with educational ad for the clidren. In this I house, there is a chirt in fair of preservation, and a map of isona. Indian clubs have been e1 by the teacher for the exer seeded by Lhe children. Umeder the administration of our ra, and with the co~opera. and generous assistance of the Lumber Co., a large and well. school building was erected eb saw mill town of Bowie. The house is sulfilently large to .Smaodate a hundred students. It led throughout and has sashes, 30 blinds, and is unpainted. If buIlding was painted, it would ly improve Its appearance and to its preservation. The school is rather too low to the ground would be improved if placed on piers. The grounds surround house and leading to it are bow, and as the drainage is very it will be readily seen that IIhool house is not favorably The constant rumbling of which pass ,alihin a hundred ftoin the school house is a of annoyance to both student her during class hours. BRcLE GUILLOT SCHOOL. t As indicated ly the name, this school is situnted in one of the best known interior settlements of 14 fourche Parish. The enlightened peo pie of this settlemnent are very solici sous about the education of their children and have given a practical evidence of this soltitudc by erecting at their own expense one of the Best school houses in this perish. The large eurallmeut and attendance furth er attest the interest taken in the school by its patrons. There is prob. ably no other school in the pariah where so many of the students are so large, wellabehaved soil intelligent. After the regular session is complet. ed, it is custom try for the patrons of the school t' engage the teacher foi a continuation of the ses-ion, at their own exp*ense. Mr. A. J. Michelet and Mr. M. T. Iligginhothaom as his assistant have had charge of toe Brule Gaillot School during the sea ston of 1901. Enroilment: boys, 41. girls, 29, ittal, 70. Attendance: boys. 35, girls, 2v, total, CO. CE.LINA SCLIJOL. My inf.srmation is that this school is badly loc.ated, for tha reason, that it is not w.thin reach of the mass of children who would he like'y to at tend. It seems that if the house were transferred to the front of Ludivine Plantation, a larger att'ndance would be the result. This matter might be co isi leted by the Board. At the he ginning of the session, Miss Mlaggie Tuite was atsigned to the Celima a School, but, after teach ng one month, this teacher was tr.nsfeareil, at hei request, to the ILe11ane School, an I Miss Theresa Ford was assigned to f611 the vacancy. Enrollment: boys, 16, gir's, 15. total, 31 Attcnda;:ce: boys, 7, gii Is, 6, total, 1.3. CHACBEY SchooL On a cleared space of about a half arpaent on the edge of a swamp stands what is known as the Cliachey School, a very common wooden ":hack," with a mud chimney, in a state of decay, at one side of the building, no sashes or blinds, with cracks in the floor about an inch wide in places, and the grounds liable to be flooded w.th six or more inches of water aft'r every severe rainfall, this is what constitutes the educational centre of quite a large neighborhood. On cold day s, a win dow has to be opened to let in the light of day, and, this opening of a wi.Id w lets in, at the ýaine time, the bitter cold air of the outside, thus rendering useless, fir purposes of warmth the stove that sets on the hearth of the mud chimney. As the buildiig is not susceptible of repair*, in my opanion, I think it would be better to dispose of the proprrty and establish the school on higher ground and in a building better suited to the purpose. The Chacbey School was taught for seven months by Mr Joseph Meyer, who then resigned to accept other employment. The eighth month was taught by Miss Marie L. Munch, the efficient teacher of the Rathborne School, after the comple tion of the session of that school. Eirollment: boys, 19, girls, 15, total, 34. Attendane: boys, 12, girls, 12, total, 24. CIIERAMIE SCuOOL After a session of three months under the charge of Mr. L. L. Harang, as teacher, the Board was obliged to order the closure and discontinuance of this school. The discontinuance was not efbected, however, without a warning being given to the patrons. As, in spite of the warning given, the attendance did uot increase there was no alternative but, to close the doors 'of the Cheramie School house. En roliment: boys, 9, girls, 4, total, 13. Mrs. Clara Stuart was doing effet. tive work in this school unlil Ilhe sum. mer vacation, when shc . estgned bj reason of change of residence to an other lpart of the State. She was sue. ceeded by Miss Fanny Knobloek, the teacher of the Lsgar'le School, after Ithe termination of her session. ThisI school is in a residence belonging to* M~rs. V. Prejeant, and is a wake shift for a school house. We are paying rent for this building. Enrollment: bouys, 11, girls, 10, total, 21. Atten dance: boys, 7, girls, 8, total, 15. Lowia Ceoupic ScuooL. A neat and attractive looking school house is that in which the peo I pse of lower Choopic are privileged to Isend their children. The building was erected by the Board on proper ty donated by Mr. Oseme Naquin, who has no young childuen of his own, but who was willing to do his share towards educating his neighbor's children.
