At Tetreanus Park on last Sunday s afternoon was played two very inter- a teresting games of base ball between D the Plaquemine Maroons and the Audubons of New Orleans and the Thibodaux Greys and the Wagner. of New Orleans. Over one thousand people were in , attendance and quite a good deal of b enthusiasm was manifested through. * out the games. I The game between the Plaquemine Maroons and the Audubons was b somewhat draggy and appearently o one sided at one time but the Audu- T bons got in some very clever work a and tied their opponents the score b standing 8 to 8. The Plaquemine team is composed , of a fue set of boys and made quite a happy impression upon our people t as well as the Audubons. The game between the Wagners d and the Thibodaux Greys proved of t4 course very exciting as the game was n close and hotly contested from the a start to the finish. Several errors o due to lack of team work on part of q our boys caused the Greys to lose a pretty game. Our men however did y some excellent work considerinog that it was their first game of the season. o The Waguers are all old base ball G players of long standing among which were Joe Dowie and Speedy Berkely P who are nothing more or less than a tip top professionals. They put up e a splendid game, and all the players t seemed very jovial and friendly. 1 There was n,t one single murmur of 1 complaint from either side during the t entire game and both teams played splendid ball. When the game was called the score stood 7 to 5 in favor of the Wagners. Gibbs, the California twirler, pitch ed a highly satisfactory game and seemed it good shape. He has high speed, throws to the bags with ease anud accuracy, Is cool and calm, has good control of his balls and is a good safe player. Mr. Gibbs is a very fine man and we hope to keep 7 him with us, throughout the whole i season. He is at present hard at E work as captain of the Greys in get I ting the boys in proper trim for Sun I day. The Abita Later club will meet our team tomorrow and our boys are going to try their hardest to snow the Abitas under. A good game of ball is promised and we hope every body will turn out and encourage our boys by their presence. A grand stand 60x30 has been erected in the park and those who attend the games from now on can have all the shelter and comforts necessary and the games can be en. joyed without having any thing to mar the pleasure of the evening. We hope that the attendance to. morrow will be large as the Base Ball Association is going to a great deal of expense to keep up our team and If the peopk do not come forward with the proper support every thing will in all likelihood fall through. But we think that the people of Thibodaux will aee that the Base Ball Association does not fail in its at tempt to afford some amusements for the people on Sundays thereby enliv ening the town to a considerable ex tent. Dont forget the Abita Waters and the Thilbodaux Greys will cross bats to-morrow. Be sure and attend. Convent Festival. Sunday was a greatday for the town of Thibodaux but principally for the 'oevent Festival which was esuch a decided success. Our town was thronged with visitors and the Festival was largely attended. The day was indeed lovely and every one seemed happy and in for a good time. Our kind Sisters nto conjunction with the good ladies who have been labor ing so earnestly for the success of the festival ought to feel amply repaid for their work. The good ladies of Thibodaux deserving of much praise for the faithful and sealous manner in which they worked and we mught say struggled for the success of the festival. The Pelican Club together with Mr. Wilson are to be highly complimented for favor. rendered the Sisters as well as the great interest they have manifested in behalf of the Convent The people of Thibodaux God bless their generous souls come in for a large share of praise for the liberal way in which they responded to the appeal lately sent forth from the convent. The festival was a success-a genname success-a gratifyiog fact to all who are interested. The net pro ceeds of the fair amounts to the handsome sum of $1,565. The fair for the benefit of the Chcekbey Catholic church will be 3 held on the 20th and 19th of ths - month. Father Tessier informed us Sthat he would appreciate sery muuch any asistsente that the people of Thiboalux might gender him. We have no doubt but that our people will aidl ths kind father in making his air a Bauaial ,uc2,es. Firemen's Parade. Another great and gala day is in store for Thibodaux and its people and that happens to be Firemens Day, the 16 of this mouth in other words next Wednesday. The different fire companies have gone to some expense to put out a good parade and no doubt the .]if ferent companies will make a credits ble showing. The decorations of some of the engines will be perfectly lovely. Each company will be headed by a band together with a handsome squad of marshalls and honorary members. There will be several hundred firemen I all uniformed in the parade and a beautiful sight will undoubtably be presented. There wtii be a very large number of marshals this year and the turn out thia year promises to be the grandest in the history of our fire department. The men who do service in this department ought to be given every possible encourage. ment. rheir work is indeed a com- I mendable one and a purely voluntary one at that. The excellent parades which our Firemen have given in past a years is suflficent proof to say that t the interest and welfare of our com. muntty is being zealously guarded by our deserving firemen who are the t foes of conflagrations and like terrors. r The citizens of the parish and the people of the adjoining parishes are most cordially invited to be in Thib odaux on next Wednesday to witness the annual parade of our Firemen. i A good and an unusually good time is in store for those who accept of this cordial invitation. The parade will be headed by ex State Senator J. D. Shafrer Jr. Let every body turn out rejoice I with our firemen in their jollificatlons General Order. Designating the hour at which the different Fire Companies composing the Fire Department of the town of Thibodaux, are to assemble at their respective quarters: the position they shall each hold at the point of depar. tore; and the hour and order in which they shall move in procession. J. will eepdout s mission in Chackbey beginnitg the - 27th of this month to last ten days. f The sermons will all be delhvered in F french. Father Teamsier, was indeed I fortunate to securag the services of I so able and so eloquent a speaker to I talk to his congregation. We have I had the pleasure of hearing this good e prIst several times and we venture Sto say that there are very few divines 0 in the South who are as profound in a thought, as logical and convincing in e arguments anl who have as Iperfect a n mastery of both the E,,g'ish and French language as Father OCcnuoer. n The base bhall Association hps gone Sto a great deal of expense in securing I all base ball p:,raphanallas for a a strong team of men which they have engaged at rather heavy expense aad 5 it is to be hoped that the peolle of 0 Thibodaux will give the us'ciation Sits hearty support throughout the e season. The grand stand now stands comn. pleteld and it our team is not en s couraged by a good attendance every e Sunday the fault will be wholly with I the people of the town for the basE is Ibali seoeiations are making everT b ebert to give the people some cx cf selient exhibitions. i. I The Thihoda C.rnival ('il, ill agtends giving a fair on lMay 17, 1I and 19. They Say That the Festival was a success in every perticular, and That the people of the town as well as the many excursionists who were in our little city last Sunday contributed very hberally towards the Festival. That Thihodaux presented quite a city like appearance last Sunday, and That an excursion train from Lafayette containing twelve coaches packed with people, and That one from New Orleans with eleven coaches, and That one with seven coaches from Baton Rouge brought many visitors into Thibodaux last Sunday to attend the Festival as well as to witness two splendid base ball games between the Plaquemine Maroons and the Audiu. tons and the Wagners and the Thibo daux Greys. That the Thibodaux Greys put up an excellent game notwithstanding they were defeated, and That our nine are dead sure to cap ture the pennant if our pitcher is as e-ective as he was last Sunday. That the California twirler is al. right, and That much confidence is being placed in him. That the Greys expect to give the Ahita Waters a hot race to mot row afternoon, and That everybody should turn out and cheer for our boys. That the gran:l stand is complet d4, and That those who attend Ith 3 games here after will be provided with com fortable seats. That contributions to the Convent benefit fund are coming in rather slowly, and That those who did not attend the Festival should contribute a few dol. lars to the benefit fund being raised by the SentineL That Thibodaux is on a big boom. That it has not been so lively in many months. That Tuesday was a big day for the barber shops, and That massages and hot towels were all the go throughout the day, and That a massage certainly does fix a fellow up fine. That next Wednesday promises to be another big day for our town, aod That our Firemen in parade will present a beautiful sight. That Little Bit's system has been greatly debitilated this week owing to the fact that he ate too many delih. cious frog legs. That he looks like a charade. That it is strange that people after mass all want to getout of the church at one time, an:d That it would be a geood idea if the priest would build a shed out in front of the chuzech for those people who run out when the priest begins his sermon as nclemency of the weather might pirove more iijurious than the sela wln, and That the young men who lounge around the church door during isss look as though they were lIst or were waiting for their mammas.
