We see with great satisfaction that the papers of this state are devoting much of $beir space to this important subject. The State of Louisiana is rich in land, the plimate is healthy and agreable, its pro ducts are varied, the means of transportation ample-the customs of the people all that could be desired, and yet our law-makers are tardy indeed in nsaking these inducements mnown to the world. Perhaps those in auth prity and into whose keeping this important subject naturally rests have allowed them selves tq step or shlaner over the interests of our state, that the awakening would refresh and fit them the better for the national jousts which have qoccurre4 of late years. Th ese battles have beet fought, and in all of these we have been worsted. Our errors we now see, and fortunate we can deem ourselves in discovering that It is not to late to redeem the past and trace a different r4 spore pros parous course for the future. With our peo ple the fyll aznd complete developmerqt of the many resources of this state should be the paramount object, aud it is a matter of such signal Importance that it should be upper most in the minds of all To act as the tail _otegrand anp l sunl that opinion is based on close observation, euch a course will only help to keep us jog Wing along in old rae. The speech delivered the other day in New York by ex-President Cleveland, may be said to have opened the campaign for the iDemociatic nomination; the Democrats will' now have an opportunity of expressing them selves once more on the already well-settled question of Cleveland vel non. The audacity of the ex-President in his, endeavor to taunt six million freemen to return to what he is pleased to term the true Jeffersonian faith, should excite the bitterest1 indignation throughout the country, and it is exciting it very effectually; the Democratic party is merely told that it is wrong and that he is right, and that the only method by which party harmony and unity can be seo cured is to renounce its convictions and bring itself to the adoption of his way of thinking. But Cleveland Democracy is dead, and has been dea4 ever since the general people` learned its real meaning-it was, therefore, never at any time, the Democracy of the Nation, but was always, on the other haind, combatted and finally overthrown. Not only I this, but Mr. Cleveland has been charged with having betrayed the people's trust into the hands of the money power-of pretend ing one thing and acting another; and these charges he has never been able to meet in the slightest degree, either by word or deed.t On the contrary, he is more pronounced upon the matter now than le ever was before, and if victory can only be had by the readoption of Clevelandism, we believe the Democratic party prefers defeat, or even disintegration 4nd total disruption to victory under such vicious and corrupting inquences as surround Cleveland and most of his faction. I The rank and file of the Democratic party stand for principles which alone can preserve the union-Grover Cleveland stands for principles which, if carried to their ulti mate end, will wreck the Republic. Cleve landism and Republicanism differ only in the course they are traveling, but both tend to try into the hands of the monied few, and both tend toward territorial extension, that the surplus wealth of that few may be put to profitable use in the exploitation of the coun tries of the conquered. The Democracy's opposition to Mr. Cleve land is permanent and unalterable; it was deliberately formed against him, not, as many state, because of the silver question, but before that question became sufficiently important to arrest general attention; it be-I gan when Cleveland and the Republicans' blocked all the reform legislation that came within their zone, and which was set in mo tion by a Democratic Congress. This opposi tion is deep-seated and impregnable; It has been tested in two presidential elections and -several Congressional contests, and the small force that he originally arrayed against ItI has continqoiqaly grown weaker, so that he may now be said to be a friendless political outcast, with no one even to hear, much less pay heed to his wisdom. We admit that Mr. Cleveland occupies. ithe peculiar position of being the only man that the Democracy has been able to elect to the Presidency since the civil war, outside of Til~en, who was cheated out of his prize; and that he was twice elected to that place by that party. He is, besides this, the only' living ex-President, and ppssibly should be accorded more distinction. But let the Re publicans, for whom he (aas done so much, do him honors, if lae must be honored-the Dem ocracy has noea to sparo upon him. In the eyes o~f his party, he is a spoiled child, bigot ed beyond the ability to appreciate the worth of others, and looking down with a pathetic -though disdainful glance upon the great American common people, -who made him what he was, and at the same time unwit tingly placed him in touch with the money power, who foiqnd of him a willing tool with which to plunder the Nation, and by which lie has every appearance 9f having profitted himself. The IDemocratic party is not bound to win ipi tle elections, especially at such cost aa ,urrenderizqg up the very principles upon whiplh it s4eds. If jt must be defeated, pyp jg every eeneral election unto the end of oqr times let~ j4 g 4owri with it4 qwn prig ~Iciples an4 policies. We cannot aflord to win, 1if in order to do so, we must borrow the wiclkedneus and corruptiqn of the enemy. ,Vindicator-News.
