Hard on Them. s Ella Wheeler Wilcox is ' lard on both the self-made 11 plan and the penurious hus- i, hand. Of the first she says: b "It is a pity that some self- 0 made men did nt lose the ec patterq lefqre they complet ed the job. It is sometimes unnecessary for a rich mpan to to boast that he is self-made. We would all know, without being told, that God had pothing to do with it." She justly roasts the penu- tl rionq husband, whq never tl gives his wife a cent without n begrudging it, and making b her feel as though she were ii pothing but a miserable beg- s ar, instead of the wife of h is bgso, entitled tq an pqual sharp in the profits of 1( their joqint labors. a "The bitterness of heart, n the suffering, the crucifixion pf pride these brutally selfish t44s blind husbands have paused and are causing refin pd women, are beyond words to express. ;Tye, happiness, sentiment, t all ly from such a home. a Life becomes a dreary routine a pf duty, and marriage a bon- . hlage. He says: ,'The time was wheti I was rather inclined( to blame the ,outhern white man for the Flehts of t le colored people, but a closer observation has taught me that one of the main things th!e Southern wphite man has to guard against is to keep the uegro f ro. going too deeply in debt, and ithat but for the refusal Sl oany Sauthern merchants and ma to give more cre iit,'jle negro and the be 1· .~"i~"~anet they: mqp no doubt that the ieyo tsI very improvident, ang4t)a4 trait seeius tQ be a phq~aeris'ic of his nature. The tide of emigration now i seems to be turning toward the South, and the interest B which the Southern States of are taking in the World's Fair is but a manifestation of the awakening which has al- ri ready done eb much for the in building of the New South. 1 yond any houit, the ez bits to be made at the World's Fair of 1904 by the Southern , States will be a revelation to all who have not made a spe cial study of the South's growth and advancement dur ing the past ten years. No a other section of this country has made such marked pro- I gress along general lines of improvement. The South can well afford to exert its best effort in the display of its I plroducts and manufactures 1 at thile World's Fair, the con sequent advertisement there of being of more vakie than can be obtained in any other manner. True Success. The Rev. Bernanrd Feencey, in an admirable little book entitled "'Ilow to Get On," which every boy with< some ambition ought to read, says: 'Success does not depend on the worll's estimate of your calling or profession. It depends solely ou the kuowlkdge or skill you bring to it, on the energy with which you w3rk at it, on the wholesoulctl devotion with which you are absorlbd in it. By these means you build up a character for yourself that becomes daily more and more esteemed and respected by those who come in contact wth you. *Your word la good as your bond." Your steadiness, fidelity, reliability, is never called in queatioo. You ate looked up to within your own sphere, by some with envy, by others with admiration; but all agree In regard ing you as one who has deservedly attaiued the highest possible suoeess. Now, you will surely admit that such success is worth striving for. How, then, should you begin to ac quire ii ? First and ebiefly bh deter mination. Mblake success, unqualified and anuolate, a leading feature of the ideal you keep before you. Aim at small and frequent rather than great advances.
