The following extract is ta ken from that sterling ,lheet, published in the vilest den of radicalism, the Western Re serve of Ohio, the CATHOLIC UNIVERSE. of Clevelaud. As will be observed, the article was written previous to the outrage perpetrated in the ad mission of Kellogg, and has he ring of tile true metal: Last week ha- been a me,norab'e one in the Senate of the Uited States. Eor the first time in six teen years a m:jority votcd on the Dennocratic r:de; and for the fit si trre instwenty-eighit years, a Vice Presider,t has exercised his voting pr.ivilege (ai President of the Sen ane) to decide a political question. The struggle commenced on last Wedtesday 21st ult., with a re-o" lution from Senator Thurman. which usked that the Senate should ::ct upon the coateited South Caro, !iba case (Butler, Dem., vw. Thurman's iesolutit n was car ried in Sharon's absence, by the defection of Patterson niad Cono ver to the Democratic side; and the iminent ,er ii to the Republi cans was only warded off by a vote iupon Scnator Edmund's resolution that the Senate adjourn until iMon day. 20th in-t. The tie was deccded by the bastard vote of the defacto Vice-Plresideut, Mr. Wheeler. DrAR SENNTINE:L: We left the University last Monday night, oil ia grand 'Xcnrsion to Washinlg ton City, and if your readers will hear with us awhile, we will tell them some of the things that we saw on that tmem oralle occasion. It was anLttounceC'l t hat the excursion tiran woulil arrive here ahollt 11 o'clock p. in. We reached the depot in good time, that is about threes+ heon Is helre the train did; because I dot.'l suppose you or anybody elae ever saw an eel1'.sionl trainl oil time. However, it (inttle It last; but was so crowded that many of us were nlablle to find seats. Nothing of importance hillappened on the way. We reached Washington early Tuesday morning, and after partaking of a good breakfast at Ha rvey's Restaurant, started out . to see the public buildings and other places of interest. First we went to the "SLnlthsonian In stitulte," where we we slent a most delight ful hour, viewing the curiosities collected frotn all parts of the world; among other things we saw the skeleton of the cele brated race horse, Lexington, presented by a gentleulau of Kentucky. \\'We next visited the Treasury Depart ment. This is a mlagnificeut building, covering two and a half acres of ground. Having secured a guide near the south ern entrance, we were condnlcted all through it, and had everything explained to us. In otne room we saw all enlormolnls tile of Ulited States Bonds, representing three hundred millions of dollars; in au other room, might be seen old Bank notes that had been redeemed by the govern nlentin allthier room was a large ma chine used for the purpose of destroying these redeetmed notes; further on, we found them making Bank notes, and in a large roolt just -beyond this, our guide showed us the ew lmoney "dore up" in packages, ready for distribution to the various National Banks in the country. It was noticed tlhat most of the employ. ecs were women. Then our guide took us to the secret service Depatmitet in the Treasury build ing. There we saw photographs of all the persons that have been arrested for counterfeiting money in the Ujaited States. Among the pictures were old n Ien, young men. women and children; whites, negroes, Japanlese and Chinese. When we had ftiished looking at these, we started for the White House; on reaching it, we ivere first conducted into the "East roomu." This is the rooml where all the large receotions are heal. It is uagnificently tfurnislheda-there are eight large lilrrorn arlouand the walls, reaching fromt the ceiling to the floor, and they are said to have cost tLutr hlanusiutld tdot lars alpiece. The three challlndeliers cost two thoutsand etalt. Of course these haLkeCs, brokers. bond holders, and money-changers generally of New York, Bc s ton. Philadelphia, etc., are all, in their raid against the bill to restore to silver coin the legal tender qualities it always pos sessed until robbed of them by a stealthy act of a Republican congress and tool of J ly Cooke & Co., in the Presidential chair, moved solely by regard for the interest of the great mass of the pe. pl--time farm ers, mechanics, laborers, and men engaged in 'industrial business generally They are tlways thus moved on finan cial measures. There is noth ing selfish or mean about them. Oh, no; they care nothing about themselves or their values. Th- pr3tectioii and amelioration of the condi, tion of the people, of the deb tor classes especially, is what they are after. It was.always so with therm. Therefore we may be sure it is so with therm now. When the ,eligmans, and Dodges, and Babcocks, and Morgans, and the rest, of New York, and their kindred of Boston and Philaddelphi:i, organize to defeat the restora tion of the silver dollar as le gal-tender, the worldi kiiows how theii hearts bleed for the poor and needy who would be ,o certain to sliffer from the passage of suceh a nieasmlre.
