THE RICE MARKET.
The week proved a record
breaker --the largest of the sea
son, and nearly double any cor
responding weekl: the past five
years. The chief enlargement
of demand was in Japan, which
is coming forward with fair free
dom and finding ready takers at
nominally opening figures. Un
der liberal receipts there is a
widening assortment and pres
ent offerings now include every
grade from common to choice.
With many buyers price is more
important than quality, and com

value in comparison with other

steady demand and generally
strong conditions. Along the
Atlantic coast stocks show some
slight accumulation, in the main
firmly held. Planters, having to
face the alternative proposition
whether it was better to main
tain prices and lose sales, or con
tinue selling at expense of price,
appear to have elected--or at
least the majority have elected
the former course. The idea is
prevalent that with the passing
of the whiter sorts in Louisiana,
Carolina will be sure of sutfficient
patronage to carry out its c1,I)
at full present tigures.
In New Orleans and ~tlher
southwestern points, the volume
of business shows further en

the demand forexport,but known
