Only for Short auls. Chicago. Jan. 9. - Prosecutions l against all the big packing house con cerns in the west for violations of the Sprovisions of the interstate commerce law against receiving preferential rates are contemplated by the interstate commerce commission. This fact do r veloped during the investigation by o the commission into the handling of packing house products and list meets. It is also apparent that the commis sion and the railroad management of the entire country practically had en tered into an alliance for the purpose of inducing congress to pass legislation º permitting the railroads to pool undiwe certain regulations by the interstate commerce commission, and that it 1i believed such a law can and will be passed. The third development of the day 7 was the anouncement that the commia sion had requested the attendanoe here of all the leading men in the ad vancement of the community of later ests idea including J. P. Morgan, James J. Hill and E. H. Harriman, and that if these men failed to respond to the request harsher measures would be taken to compel their coming. r. Evidence upon which to base prose cutions against the packers was ob tained in abundance. Traffic manag ers and vice presidents of roads east and west admitted freely that there was no pretense toward maintaining tariff rates on packing house products and list of meats for export or domns tic use except for a short time at the beginnig of each year. h The packing houses and their repre sentatives to whom rebates were paid e during 1901, according to Commission er Prouty, will, if possible, be made d amenable to the maximum fine of $6060 n for every violation of the law. INVESTIGATION POSTPONED Important Vltnkes Not Present to Otve Testimony Refer Commuisslon. Chicago, Jan. 9.-Owing to the ab sence of necessary witnesses the in quiry of the interstate commerce com mission into the workings of the "community of interest" plan of rail roads has been postponed until Janu ary 24 and the commission itself ad journed to meet in Chicago that date. President Farris of Burlington and Darius Miller, said to be slated for traffic directorship of Northwestern lines if their consolidation is not pre vented, were present, as were a num ber of other railroad men. President Hill of the Great North ern. President Miller of the Northern Pacific. President Harriman of the Southern Pacific, and J. C. Stubbs, traffic director of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific system, were absent, and Chairman Knapp of the commis sion announced that, owing to the fact that the gentlemen mentioned were best qualified to give complete and comprehensive testimony concerning the matter in hand it had been thought best to postpone investigation till these witnesses could be brought before the commission. He declared that if necessary witnesses would be compelled by court subpoenas to at tend. Mokinley Memorial Day.
