Tiventv-five oyster shuckers of Balti* more, eleven of whom arc white, came down this morning aud secured Galilean Hall on East street, where a meeting was held to-day. The object of their visit is to aid the Annapolis shuckers. This morning a short ses sion was held, but as only a few An napolis shuckers were present it was decided to take a recess until the afternoon. A colored sbucker called the meeting to order. M. T. Mclutire was made president, James Biddle, vice-president, B. Simms, the secre tary, John Henning, financial secre tary and A. Hathaway, treasurer. The Annapolis shuckers organize an. association with Robert Queen, president. John H. Brice and two others will go to Baltimore and % get the funds for the Annapolis strikers, amounts to about $4 a week for each man A resolution declaring that they would not work at the reduced price was adopted: 1 The Baltimore shuckers reassembled in the afternoon and decided to recommend to the Bal timore meeting that each Baltimore shuker contribute 20 cents a week to the Annapolis strikers. . A Skating Rink Case. The Capital stated sometime since that a test case was being tried in Boston, as to the right of colored people to visit a skating rink in that city, which was designed by the pro prietors to be exclusively for the use of the bon ton of that city. Two col ored youths were refused admittance, and brought suit. After a protracted trial the manager was fined the full penalty of the law—a fine of SSO in each case. The colored people of Annapolis,as a rule, be it said to their credit, have too much pride and self respect to force themselves into com pany where their presence is offensive to oar-fastidious and sometimes less respectable white persons. The man ager of our skating rink is not likely to be troubled by our well-behaved i colored population if it is known their presence is not wanted. Vr* toO*M you The board of district commission ers of Washington has given notice that there is no objection to armed military companies entering the Dis trict of Columbia to participate in the ceremonies of dedicating the Wash ington Monument on the 22d proximo and the inauguration of President Cleveland on the 4th of March. Now then, let oar patriotic boys fix up their shooting irons in time to be on hand at these important ceremonies. Those who want office can carry their petitions and other documents in their knapsacks. ' ; What the Capital Gives. The Evening Capital as a local family paper, gives daily not only all the local topics of interest transpiring in, the city and county, but in addi tion from seven to eight columns mis cellaneous topics, household, scientific, &c , making in all twelve columns of reading matter daily or seventy two columns weekly, and all for six cents a week. More than any other paper published in the county. It is the best local newspaper published in the county. St. Mary’s Female Seminary. The trustees of the St. Mary’s Fe male Seminary in their report to the Governor, shows the Institution to be in a flourishing condition. Anne Arundel has a free scholarship in the seminary. Prof. Ford on Hand! The splendid Elocutional Treat at the First M. E. Church on Friday i night! Don’t fail to be there early! Admission 25 cents, and children 2 for 25 cents. ...., . The Festive Mananose. Bluff Point, on the Government farm, is the objective point for mana nose hunters when the tide is low, and early in the morning is the time to wrestle with the festive shell fish that buries itself deep into the mud. A tiny hole in the surface generally indicates where the mananose is to be found napping, and the large force that generally swarm the shores have to work energetically to get a good mess for the table. Some of our citizens aro quite expert with the spade. It is considered a very bad day for mananosing when “Commo dore” John Daniels cao’t show a large basketful of them as the result of few hours’ work, and it is said sev eral other Annapolitans who follow mananosing more for a business than for pleasure, are likewise handy at this “occupation. An enterprising “mananoser” in Annapolis cleans and sells them at 20 cents a quart, ready for cooking, and has built up quite an extensive trade in his line. When fried or stewed they equal, if not sur pass, their kinsfolk, the oyster. As mananoses can only be caught at cer tain periods the shores are generally crowded when the tide is low, and there is sufficient interest taken in the sport by hunters to compensate for the bleak winda and the other incon veniences that are encountered in the little beds where the succulent mana nose lies. Work fortheLoc.il Improvement Asso ciation. Perhaps no single spot in town is capable*t)f so much improvement, at slight expense, as the State House grounds in the immediate rear of the Comptroller’s office. *At the very head of the Avenue leading from the Naval Academy aud the Post office, *it is now apparently a place of deposit for the cinders from the heating apa ratns of the Capitol. A low orna mental fence would hide these. A fountain and a few flowers would rtake things attractive. The Naval Appropriation. In the Honse the conference report on the naval appropriation bill was agreed to yesterday. It now goes to the Senate, and if that august body can spare a little time to-day or to morrow from their labors in behalf of railroad monopolies, our Naval Academy employes will probably be returned to their duties on the Ist of February. Wmmmmmrnm Tne Cold Weather. Heavy snow storms prevailed yes terday in many parts of the country, accompained in the western section with fierce blizzards and the coldest temperature to an unprecedented point and railroad travel was seriously in terfered with. In this county the snow fall was succeeded with a bright sun at an early hoar in the morning, and the A. A E. was on time, as us ual. Personal Mention. The Baltimorean of Saturday says: “A young gentleman of Baltimore, who has just tarried a week or so in Annapolis, says he never before saw so many pretty girls in a place of its size.” Mrs.Ed win Cole and daughters are stopping at Mrs. Curtin’s on King George street, and not Mrs. “Emma,” as stated in yesterday’s Capital. Don’t miss Prof. Ford on Friday night at Firiat M.*E. Church. Cooking School. Miss Juliet Corson is making a bit in Baltimore, teaching the art of cook ing. Some of the Annapolis ladies we understand, have caught on to the cooking fever and contemplate the es tablishment of a cooking school in our midst shortly. ££TGo to see McKioney, the Champion Skater of The Oil and Iron Circuit, at the Rink—Every day this week. - Revival Services. Look at the Other Side* Mr. Editor :—I take you at your wofd when you state that your col umns arc open to both sides of the lo cal option question, and beg leave to make the following observations : If local option is such a very great blessing why is it that two-thirds of our merchants (some of them hereto fore leading temperance men) openly declare that they would vote to-mor row to repeal the obnoxious law ? Strip the local option question of its moral aspect, and the argument In Us favor falls entirely to the ground, so far as Annapolis is concerned. Observer. A Marriage in the County. Mr. Ezra R. Sbeckells was mar ried yesterday to Miss Lillie Haw-|| kins at the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. Wm, \V\ Hawkins, of the 2nd district. Rev. Wm. McDonnell| officiated. Quite a handsome recep tion was given to those in attendance on the nuptials by the hospitable host ; and after spending several en joyable hours over the feast of good things, the bride left with the groom for her new home and new dnties at the residence of the groom, on South river, where we wish them many years of happy enjoyment, A Walking Buffalo. Mr. Julius Wamkassell, keeper of Thomas’ Point Light House was in town to-day, wrapped in a Buffalo robe overcoat, the kind* they wear in Montanua, when the thermometer stands about 40 degrees below zero. Mr. Wamkassell, says ice formed last night, half way the bay, and it was with difficulty that steamers could navigate. Talcing Refsce in Oar Martoar. t Five tugs were compelled to 'seek safety in our-harbor yesterday, being ooable to get up to Baltimore with their tows. A large fleet of oyster vessels were stopped by the ice and anchored in Sandy Point. The sebr. Herald, ashore at Horn Point, was relieved yesterday and anchored in the harbor. The Skating Rink, This new venture appears to be well supported by our citizens, con sidering the very cold weather since its opening and the slippery condition of oar streets for pedestrians.
