Mb. Editor:—The following puz
zling question* having arisen in a die
eussiou between some ladies and gen
tlemen last evening, who became
somewhat divided in their opinions,
it was finally decided to refer the
questions and answers to tbe editor
of tbe Capital, for him to cogitate
upon. The first conundrum is a*
follows:
“Brothers and sisters I have none,
but that man's father is my father’s
son.” Wtat relation were the two
to each other ?
Some contend that they were broth
ers, and others contend that they
were father aud son
The other question is: “Two
brothers marry—one marries tbe
mother and the other the motherV
daughter.” Now, what relation are
their children to each other?
if you can enlighten us through
your spicy and very readable paper,
you will confer a favor upon a con
stant Lady Reader.
[We are not a very good hand at
answering riddles, but we always
try, as tar as we are able, to answer
questions of this kind for the ladies,
where their curiosity is aroused.—
The first question is an old legion.—
A man tiud beeu imprisoned for a
severe crime, and condemned to
death. The King of the country had
said if be could ompose a riddle that
would puzzle the learned of his kiug
dow to solve, he would spare bis life.
In the same prison was the man’*
son, but none kuew it but himself.—
The man was brotheriess and sister
less, aud when aqked if he bad com
posed the riddle upon which depend
ed his life, be pointed to the young
man in tbe cell with him and said :
' Brothers and sisters I have none—
but that mao’s father is my father’s
son.” What kin is he to me ? After
the,King and his learned advisers
had gifen up tbe riddle, they asked
the condemned man for tbe answer,
and he replied, “he is my sod.”
The second question—lf two broth
era marry —one the mother and tbe
other the mother’s daughter—Wbat
relation will their children be to each
other ? is a rather mixed up affair
But to our best judgment they would
be trebly related. On the father’s
side they would be first cousins,
neices and nephews, and on tbe
mothers’ side they would be half
brothers and sisters and grand child
