M- A3BOTT. - - - - EOiTOe CHRISTMAS GREETING. “Another cyale of time is eotn pTete, and the silvery chiming of Christmas bells announces the re turn of the great natal anniyerv of 1V tee and good-will to all man kind.” This old festival, the sweeiest of the year, has long boen observed as a season of feasting and merry making is made joyous by fami ly reunion and pleasant remembian* ces of friends. It is pre-eminently time of hospitality snd home cheer and of quickened eharity and sym p t thy—a time when our hearts rea ped most fully lo tenderness and • love, and when for a brief period we lay aside life’s eares and per plexiti*s and tune our voices to no es of gladness and of praise. In the twelvemonth that has sped bv since last we joined in these so cial festivities, no life has been all sunshine, for the brighter the light, the more intense the shadow; and there are sew of us that have nbt realized in our own experience that joy’s other side is sorrow. There is no anniversary that opt ns the flood-gates of memory like this Christmas-tide so redolent and innocent with mirth and tender home recollections. Ibe intervening years are swept aside as a filmy veil, and friends who left us in the dim twilight of the long ago are with ns in the freshness and joy and buoy ancy of youth., To all its friends and readers, Tiik Capital extends the greetings of the season, and wishes them a Merry Christmas Peterson’s Magazine for Janua ry begius the year with fresh at tractions aud increased merit. Ihe two steel-plates are charming in subject and engraved with great delicacy and finish. “Zoar and the Zoarit.es,” by G. W. Christine, is a very interesting illustrated ar ticle; and there is also an illustra ted story. “Between Two New Years,” by Georgia Grant, which is delightfully told. Edgar Fawcett and the author of “A Second Life” begin serials, which open with great brilliancy and promise. The short stories are as good as they are var ied, and “The Care of the Sick,” bv Miss Scovil, is an admirable and valuable paper. The mammoth fashion-plate gives the newest and most effective styles for cos umes. The work-table .and embroidery patterns are the prettiest any maga zine can boast. The Supplement has a handsome design for a beJ spreadjitis noticeabltas being the largest, pattern ever given by any publication. Try “Peterson” fora year, and you will not regret it. New Yore, Dec. hi—Jake Kdrain's ( friends were just one day late with their •5.0U0 to cover John L. Sullivan's deposit at Tbe Clipper office, but they have posted their money, and it looks now as if tbe two big fellows, who both claim championship honors, may meet for a finish fight for $lO,- 000 a side wituin the next six months. Boston, Dec. 23.—The announcement that Kilrain's backer had covered Sullivan's de posit at The Clipper offios was wrlooms news to local admirers of John L. Tbs “Big Fel low” himself was glad that his rival had at last come to time, but he has grown to ex pect nothing genuine from Kilrain’s friends In conversation with a reporter Sullivan said: “When I made my challenge to Kitrain I didn’t fill it in with lota of stipulations that I didn’t Intend to Insist upon. I said in it that I'd fight Kilrain in six months' time for SIO,OOO a side. Now Fox has taken over two weeks to consider my challenge, and why does he oome out and talk about a battle within three or four months! I think I am justified in putting the date six months ahead, and I did it because I wanted to be in the beet form possible, and not take tbe chance of having my backers lose on ac count of my condition." Big Fire at Lynn. Bostos, Dec. 24.—A fire, which waa first liacovered in the morocco factory of P. >nox, at tbe corner of Market street and larruon court, Lynn, entirely destroyed the mildlng and stock. My Competitors are Trying to Alarm Creditors, But I am Succeeding in Alarming My Competitors. And will make it my custom To keep going if I bust ’em. 1 sell good goods for cash, And never sell trash; I am never at ease Unless my trade I eau please. I do all 1 possibly can For child, woman and man, I never stop hustling, But am always found rustling, And puzzling my mind Some bargain to find. And you’ll soon hear a great squeal, For I have made another deal. I got some goods cheap, And got such a heap, That I must let them go At prices so wonderfully low, That competitors will again say My bills I cannot pay. Hut while they are blowing, *99 My goods will keep going; And those to whom 1 sell, Will find they have done well. 1 buy bankrupt slin ks Of Watches, Jewelry and Clocks; And have just made a big buy That will cause some to cry. While others will just laugh and holhr, When they see what 1 give for a dollar. My trade will keep growing, The bargains keep going; Others’ business may be dead, But 1 will keep going ahead, Notwithstanding they say I can never make it pay ; And if I keep doing business so To the dogs I will go. But it is very easy to see Why they are so bitter toward me, It’s my prices they cannot meet, And in quality compete. There are some, it is quite plain, Who think they will make gain By telling people I will cheat; But themselves they will beat, And nothing avail, By keeping up such a wail; But will surely fail If they keep up that bawl. In conduoion I will say, I will make it pay For you to come to my store, And for your money will give you more Than any oilier man dare, And always deal with you square. AUho’ competitors may kick, And try to make you sick, If you w ill stay with me I will faithfully guarantee That my goods shall be as represented, Or back your money will be presented. Rolasd Bradt, Auctioneer, 12 Btd Annapolis, Md. Luxuriant Hair Can only be preserved by keeping the scalp clean, cool, and free from dan druff, and the body in a healthful condition. The great popularity oi Ayer’s Hair Vigor is due to the fact that it cleanses the scalp, promotes the growth of the hair, prevents it from falling out, and gives it that soft ami silky gloss so essential to perfect beauty. Frederick Hardy, of Roxbury, Mass, a gentleman fifty years of age, was fast losing his hair, and what remained was growing gray. After trying various dressings with no effect, he commenced the use of Ayer's Hair Vigor. "It . stopped the falling out,” he writes; “and, to my great surprise, converted my white hair (without staining the s<'alp) to the same shade of brown it had when I was 25 years of age.” Ten Years Younger. Mrs. Mary Montgomery, of Boston, writes: "For years, I was compelled to wear a dress cap to conceal a bald spot on the crown of my head ; but now I gladly lay the cap aside, for your Hair Vigor is bringing out a new growth. I could hardly trust my senses when I first found my hair growing; hut’there it is, and I am delighted. 1 look ten gears younger .” A similar result attended the use of Ayer’s Hair Vigor by Mrs. O. O. Pres cott, of Charlestown, Mass., Miss Bessie H. Bedloe, of Burlington, Vt., Mrs. J. J. Burton, of Bangor, Me., and numerous others. • The loss of hair may be owing to im purity of tigs blood or derangement of the stomach and liver, in which case,- a course of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla or of Ayer’s Pills, in connection with the Vigor, may be necessary to give health mitt tone to all the functions of tlie body. At the same time, it cannot be too strongly urged that none of these 1 remedies can do mnch good without a persevering trial and strict attention i to cleanly and temperate habits. .■, .
