WM. M- AB9OTT. - - - - EDITOR Among the recent periodical visi tors to oir exchange table is vol. I, No. 2, of a twelve page folio en titled “Jove,” filled with bright and witty snyings, brilliantly illus trated with seasonable hits. Pub lished by Frank E. lloush & Co., Brattleboro', Vt. With the issue of the American on Christmas day each subscriber of that progressive journal was pie sented with a beautifully illustrated and highly illuminated counting house calendar for 1882, contain ing much useful and valuable infor mation to the business man. The river and harbor bill just re ported to the House approximates twelve millions of dollars—and not one cent of this is for Annapolis harbor. This is somewhat less than that of last year, but will bo ample for all necessary purposes, as there is a large unexpendod balance of last year’s appropriation still re maining in the treasury, and avail able for the prosecution of improve ments already begun. A special dispatch from Philadel phia to the Alexandria Gazette says: “The ousting of Samuel Speneer from tho presidency of the Balti more and Ohio Railroad company was the work of a woman. Al though elovated to the control of tho road by the Garretts, President Spencer had for some time been re garded as inimical to the Garrett policy. The election of Charles F. Mayer to succeed Mr. Spencer was accomplished through the en ergy and shrewdness of Miss Mary Garrett.” It takes a womau’s shrewd ness oftentimes to accomplish an end in view, and were there more women of iutelligeuce, tact and energy, like Miss Mary Gar rett, the world would be better and wiser. A very sensible reform ha 3 been instituted in the fashionable world at the East. It has been decided by “society”—whatever that may imply—that it is not the proper thing to exhibit wedding presents except to immediate relatives or in timate friends of the family. The custom in vogue for many years has partaken largely of the character of blackmail. An invitation to a wed ding has been tantamount to the demand of the highway robber, for the acceptance of the invitation car ried with it the necessity of carry ing a wedding preseat along. It has been a species of polite mendi cauey, and the prospect of its abol ishment will afford satisfaction to thousands of the victims of the present vicious and demoralizing custom. New York, Dec. 27.—A solemn requiem mass for the repose of the soul of the Very Rev. Isaac T. Hooker, the founder and father superior of the house of the Paulist Fathers in West Fifty-ninth street, and of the church of St. Paul the Apostle, was celebrated in that church. Archbishop Corrigan, as sisted by Mgr. Donnelly, officiated. After the services, which were most impree | sive, the remains of the dead priest ; were taken to St. Patrick's church in Mott | street, where they were temporarily con signed to a vault, their final resting place not yet having been deckled upon. My Competitors are Trying to Alarm Creditors, But I am Succeeding in Alarming My Competitors. And will make it tny custom^ To keep going if I bust 'em. 1 sell good goods for cash, And never sell trash; I am never at ease Unless my trade I can please. I do all I possibly can For child, woman ami man, 1 never stop hustling, But am always fouud rustling, And puzzling my mind Some bargain to find. And you’ll soon hear a great squeal, Fur 1 have mads another deal. I got some goods cheap, And got such a heap, That I must let them go At prices so wonderfully low, That competitors will again say Mv bills I cannot pay. But while they ait* blowing, Mv goods will keep going; And those to whom I sell, Will find they have done well. 1 buy bankrupt stocks Of Watches, Jewelry and Clocks; And have just made a big buy That will cause so tit to cry, While others will just laugh and holl'r, When they see what I give for a dollar. My trade will keep growing, Ttie bargains keep going; Others’ business may be dead, But 1 w ill keep going ahead, Notwithstanding they say 1 can never make it pay; And if I keep doing business so To the dogs I will go. But it is very easy to see Why they are so hitter toward me, It's mv prices they cannot meet, And in quality compete. There are some, it is quite plain, Who think they will make gain By telling people I will cheat; But themselves they will beat, And nothing avail, By keeping up such a wail; But wili surely fail If they keep up that bawl. In conclnoion I will say, I will make it pny For you to come to mv store. And for your money will give you more Than any other man dare, And always deal with you square. Altho’ competitors may kick, And try to make you sick, If you will stay with me I will faithfully guarantee That my goods shall be as represented. Or hack your money will lie presented. Roland Bradt, Auctioneer, 12 Btd Annapolis, Md. Luxuriant Hair Can only’ bo preserved by keeping the scalp clean, cool, and free front dan druff, and the body in a healthful condition. The great popularity oi Ayer’s Hair Vigor is due to the fact that it cleanses the scalp, promotes the growth of the hair, prevents it from falling out, and gives it that soft and silky gloss so essential to perfect beauty. Frederick Hardy, of Roxhury, Mass, a gentleman fifty years of age, was fast losing his hair, and what remained was growing gray. After trying various dressings with no effect, he commenced the use of Ayer’s Hair Vigor. "It stopped the falling out,” he writes; “and, to my great surprise, converted my white hair (without staining the scalp) to the same shade of broicn it had when I was 25 yews of age.” Ten Years Younger. Mrs. Mary Montgomery, of Boston, writes: “For years, I was compelled to wear a dress cap to conceal a bald Rpot on the crown of my head ; hut now I gladly lay the cap aside, for your Hair Vigor is bringing out a new growth. I could hardly trust my senses when I first found my hair growing; but there it is, and I am delighted. 1 look ten years younger." A similar result attended the use of Ayer’s Hair Vigor by Mrs. O. O. Pres cott, of Charlestown, Mass., Miss Bessie H. Bedloe, of Burlington, Vt., Mrs. J. J. Burton, of Bangor, Me., and numerous others. The loss of hair may be owing to im purity of the blood or derangement of the stomach and liver, in which case, a course of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla or of Ayer’s Pills, in connection with the Vigor, may be necessary to give health and tone to all the functions of the body. At the same time, it cannot be too strongly urged that none of these * remedies can do much good without a persevering trial and strict attention . to cleanly and temperate habits.
