Thesubj.ct discussed upon Pst night was the observance of lent. Said the pas tor, we are tnquently asked by iteis uis, not of our own Church, why we do n t observe Lent. It is proper, therefore, that we should, in this puulic manner, give some of tlie reasons wby we do not join will) Christians of other denominations in its observance. Our non observance is not because we think less of the great duties and facts which others seek to emphasize. We believe in fastiDg, and church going, and retirement from tbe ; tayevies of tlie world. And meditation up on device things, aa truly and fully prob ably, as those who differ frou us We differ as to the times and tbe length of our fasis, and believe that they should 1 not be ut Kiattd times, but be observed as the emergency may buggest There are times in the experience of individuals, families, the church aud the nation, when sating is proper aud beneficial, and is recommended by our cburcii. As a help to prayer and devout mediation we esteem it very higuly. As to attendance upon Ghurcb, retirement from tbe world, and devout meditation upon divine truth, we •re not bebiud other denominations.—- Then us a Chinch, we are just as earnest in magnifying tbe facts of Christ’s suffer lug, death and resurrect!, n as otbrs.— These are the great themes of our pulpits, and every Sabbath reminds us of the res urrtctiou, and is an Easter to us. The protracted fast of Christ was superhuman *nd miracul .us, and, of course, cannot be imitated by us. it otcurred only once tu the life of our Lord. We have no evi dence that the Apostles as early desclples observed such a period, and there is no coinmaud to the Church to appoint such a season. But while we differ from some of our fellow Christians on these points, we think it a good thing that a large part of our population turn their attention, with more thau ordinary nterest. to the sub j.clof religion. The calm that comes alter the whirl in which society has been tor months, is promotive ef serious thought. On several accounts the time is 'uiiabie for church-going, and we intend, as we have dune in the past, to have sev ral special services to prepare our minds lor the work of tbe Lord. W'e give s .uost cordial welcome to people of ail de nominations to join with us in these ser vices. Acquittal of Wm. Johnson. ( Wm. Cn the day of the robbery a suspicious looking colored man come into tbe store and loitered around, finally taking a seat on a box near the stove opposite the door io the ally, which he noticed, very par ticular. Wneoever approached by Mr. MoB9 be would pretend he was asleep, and when asked what was the matter he re plied that be had been up at a colored festival the night before >nd was a little drowsy. He said he came here the night before on an oyser boat, but when he got to the wharf in tbe morning, the boat bad gone. No more wm thought of the affair until Friday, when Mrs. Moss read io tbe Baltimore Sun an account *f a similar robbery at Tort Deposit, Cecil county and the arrests of the robbers in Baltimore. The description given of the party seemed to tally so well with the man that was in Mr. Moss’ store that he tele graphed Marshal Frey to hold him until he could send some one to identify him. vir M ss imtnediateiy dispatched his clerk, Mr. Trautwine, to Baltimore, who proceed to tbe Ceatral Police Station where the prisoner was held for the Cecil county authorities. He identified the maa as tbe one in the store on the day of tbe robbery, and upon his being close ly questioned by the Marshal as to the disposition of tbe goods taken from Mr. Moss he produced a pond ticket for the go'd watch which was recovered. Th* revolvers and cloth ing were not recovered- There wefe three parties connected with tbe Port De posit robbery, and it is supposed the same parties were also interested in tbe robbery of Mr. Mews. Luxuriant Hair Can only be preserved by keeping the scalp clean, cool, and free from dan druff, and the hotly in a healthful condition. The great popularity ol Ayer’s llair Vigor is due to the fact that it cleanses the scalp, promotes the growth of the hair, prevents it from falling out, and gives it that soft and silky gjossso essential to perfect beauty* Frederick Jiardy, of Itoxhury, Mass, gentleman fifty years of age, was fast losing his hair, ami what remained was growing gray. After trying various dressings with no effect, he commenced the use of Ayer’s Hair Vigor. “It stopped the falling out,” he writes; "and, to my great surprise, converted my white hair (without staining the scalp) to the same shade of broicn it had when I was 2o years of age.” Ten Years Younger. Mrs. Mary Montgomery, ot Boston, writes: "For years, I was compelled J) to wear a dress cap to conceal a bald / • spot on the crown of my head ; but now I gladly lay the cup aside, for your Hair Vigor is bringing out a new growth. I could hardly trust my senses when I first found my liair growing; but there it is, and 1 am delighted. I look ten years younger." A similar result attended the use of Ayer’s Hair Vigor by Mrs. O. O. Pres cott, of Charlestown, Mass., Miss Bessie If. Bedloe, of Burlington, Vt., Mrs. J. J. Burton, of Bangor, Me., and numerous others. The loss of hair may- l*e owiug*t© im purity of the blood or derangement of the stomach and liver, ill which case, a course of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla or of Ayer’s Pills, in connection with the Vigor, may he necessary to give health and tone to all the functions of the body. At the same time, it canuot be too strongly urged that none of these remedies cau do much good without a persevering trial and strict attention to cleanly and temperate habits.
