Somual is the name of a new hypnotic recently discovered by a Ber lin physician. Its effects are less de pressing than those of chloral. It is said that there is an element in the common pineapple similar to pep sine, and of such remarkable strength that the juioe of a single apple will di gest 10 pounds of beef. It is further stated that the juioe of the fruit is a very aotive solvent of the membrane found in diphtheria. A Swedish engineer has invented a novel method of blasting by electricity. He employs a volts arc pr.winced be tween two carbon rods placed parallel. When the arc is moved close to the spot where blasting is to be effected an in tense local heat is created, followed by expansion, which has the effect of split ting the rock. Dr. Janies S. Kelly, a New York phy sician, who has been in Berlin studying Dr. Koch’s treatment, lias returned home a convert totlis system, but strong in tlis belief that the lymph is danger ous in inexperienced hands. He says: “I consider that the lymph, to the med ical world, is what dynamite is to the engineer. " A large steel sailing has re cently been built in Norway among whose fittings is a patent oil distributer, by which oil can i>e thrown upon the waves during severe Btorms. Within the vessel there is an iron reservoir from which a pipe extends alongside of the vessel near the water line an I as rl. se to the bow as possible A valve in the pipe close to the reservoir regulates the distribution of the oil. This is prob ably the first case in which provision for throwing oil upon the waves lias been made from the first designing and build ing of a vessel.—[Railway Review. Enormous piles of bones are collected at the railroad stations on the plains. At s mie points they are 10 or 15 feet high, and cover acres of ground. From the thigh bones of cattle are made kuife and parasol handles, fan sticks, aud the handles of tooth and hair brushes, while all the small bones are boiled and then burned for lamp black. The mat ter extracted by boiling is u<ed to make glue, and n ucli of the so called “ bear's grease” used in barbers’ shops is made out of the marrow and fat of these bones. Toe bone black is used l>v sugar refiners to purify sugar, and commands a good price. A proposal is now under consi lerai ion for the prevention < t the smoke and fog plague bv which L >udon is from time to time nfil cted. The proposed remedy is to turn a large portion of the coal sup ply of the Yorkshire, 'Stafford tliire, and South Wales coal fields into gas and con vey it by pipes to Loudon; where its use will be regulated somewhat after the same manner as that adapted in Pitts burg with natural gaa Such an abundant supply of cheap fuel would mean a saving to the city of over $100,000,000 annually, besides transforming the city of smoke and fog into one of the health iest places in the world. A great feature in metal working, ac cording to the American Manufacturer, was recently accomplished at the Superior Mill at Allegheny, Pa. The feat consists of rolling a strip of steel for a spring 6 inches wide, ± of an inch thick, and 810 feet long. The work as successfully performed ami the spring properly tempered at the first effort. That establishment has since received a large order for such springs, which are designed to enter into the construction of a new car motor, for which a great demand is anticipated. The order had previously been tendered to all the large English and continental works of Europe, none of which would undertake to do it The railway tunnel under the St Clair River, between Michigan and Canada, was formed by driviug an iron cylinder into the earth under the river bed and pushing it forward as fast as the exca vated earth could be removed. A three mile tunnel has been constructed in London on a similar plan, which is said to have cost less and to have been finislied in less time than would have been required by tiie old methods. And now comes a project to unite Newark and New York by a 15 mile tunnel, in which electricity is to be tiie sole motive power. Tunnels will undoubtedly play a prominent part in the systems of trans portation in all large cities. One of tiie latest applications of elec tricity to deutistry has been exhibited in E gland in the shape of an apparatus destined to effect a revolution in certain kinds of work, called the dental vibrator. By means of this most simple apparatus it is said that tiie extraction of teeth is rendered actually as well as nominally painless The principle of the operation is that a rapidly interrupted current is allowed to pas through the body of the patient, who grasps a handle in each hand, while a third connection is made io tiie forceps, so that a shunt of the current passes through the teeth.
