but whenever pride puts in it* word
•varything goes wrong, and what it
might really Is* desirable to do quietly
and innocently, it is mortally dangerous
to do proudly.
The heart w-ill commonly govern the
head, and it is certain that any strong
passion, set the wrong way, will always
infatuate the wisest of men; therefore
the first jiart of wisdom is to watch the
affections.
It is a pleasant fallacy to sup|sise that
the sentiment of friendliness and the
emotion of love are of themselves neces
sarily noble and magnanimous. They
are happily often united with these qual
ities, and sometimes call forth the most
lofty heroism and sublime self sacrifice
ot which human nature is capable. Hut
they are not always thus happily mated
to a generous spirit. There are some who
would be ashamed to be graqiingaud
avaricious in money matters, or even
miserly and selfish as regards their tinie,
who yet introduce these qualities freely
into the sphere of their affections, and
thus bring much misery to those they
love. Of course this is not iutejitional.
No one deliberately plans to afllict his
dear friends; but it is one of those sad
consequences which must always in some
form follow a course of conduct at once
thoughtless and selfish.
