Under Republican rule it takes $2(X, 000 annually toiun Allegany coun ty. Says the Cumberland Evening Times, what will it take to ran the suite if Lowut’e* is made Governor? .since Governor McKinley publicly confessed the charges made by ex- Governor Campbell, alleging corruption in the Republican Legislature during its hist sessiou, the people of Ohio are lieginning to realize that “the camels are coming.” ITH Indianapolis against him, General Harrison lias good reasons to feel that his day as a potential figure in politics is gone, lint let the ex-I’resi deni console himself. He can make more money practicing law than he ever could in the White House. Ur, lx>wudes says he is in favor of good r- ads. Why does not his party in Allegany county give us good roads? We have the worst roads of any county in the State, with the exception probab ly Gar.ett county, and the Republi cans are in control there also.— Cmmber land Times. Mu. Bonaparte, the Republican super visor of election ot Baltimore city, says lie will expose all attempts at fraud so far as lay in his {lower and bring to punishment any kind of crime or fraudulent action, who ever might be guilty of it or whatever party it might aim to benefit. He would lie a very incom|eteiit supervisor if he did not. From the cities and larger towns of the country cou es one report as to Ihe public schools* There is not nearly enough desk room for the pupils. Thou sands must remain without instruction localise there is not dnhoolhouse room for them. This is a melancholy state of atTairs. The plain truth is that the public school fund of the country lias been used too freely ta provide high school and college instruction for ad vanced pupils, leaving not enough f#r those of tender years. This was a great mistake. A human being can get on iu the world decently and com fortably if hs has a knowledge of the three R’s, no more. Without that his chance is slim. The first duty therefore of school boards is to provide ample room, accommodations and instruction for the primary pupils, though the high school students have to go without in struction for a year. They know enough to earn their own living al ready. The primary pupils must be gathered in off the street and put un der instruction even if there should be in consequence no high school at all. The Republican platform declares for reassessment and the pubiic schools —two of the cardinal principles of the l>emocralic pai ty. The latter establish ed, and to-day maintains the best pub lie school system in the country, and the Republican declaration in favor of their continuance is but a tribute to their excellence and an effort to win votes from t lie Democracy. Mr. Lowndes and his party are without re cord on this question in Maryland and it is scarcely probable that his party, with its large negro vote, on which it depends for success, will improve the school system in the estimation of the white people of tlie State, who consti tute the voting population of the Demo cratic party. If a lesson is to be learned from Republican action in other States where the Republicans are in the as cendency, the white schools will uot be improved iu the estimation of the white people ef Maryland. Neither are we encouraged, if we look at Mr. Lowndes' record ou reassessments During the last session of the Legislature he st*x>d shoulder to shoulder with the Tax- Dodgers of Baltimore and with them made common cause against a reassess ment of the property of the State.— Cumberland Evening Times.
