The first campaign gnu ban been fired. The war correspondents write the letters, but the cenwirß do the rest. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to adopt the Perniaii method here for cure of drunk enuess. That- in to nail the drnukard’s ear to tho sidewalk. Only trouble about this scheme is that other people in town might find difficulty in stumb ling over the drunks. Tho Capital yesterday contained in full the speech of acceptance of Judge Parker. It is a masterly effort of a masterly mind and doubly endears the writer to the well-thinking peojile of this nation which desires to elect him its chief. If, as it is proposed to prove, over eight thousand Armenians were mas sacred in Turkey within the last four months, there certainly is years of work ahead for the missionaries if there is not a very strong reason for immediate interference upon the part of every (Jliristiau nation. The difference between the morning and the evening issuos is aptly ex pressed in this fashion by a contempo rary : “Humors in the evening, news in the morning. ” —The Daily News. Strange how the multitude clamor for the rumors.—Cumberland Times. Straugo, indeed. Brother. ( When the President gave tho glad hand to the Igorrotes the latter were clothed in something else besides beads and their right mind. They wore white trousers. The poor tilings suffered, hut they had to wear more than a ftpear when presented to the “Great White Father.” Captaiu (’has. H. Stanley, an evau gt-list at Ocean Grove, is a singer as well as an evangelist. Captain Stan ley opens his mouth when he sings, lie (hats not. sing through iiis nose. He had his mouth open a few nights ago singing a hallelujah hymn, when a beetle flew in and the evangelist nearly • tit iked to death. The meeting was .- Mjiended until tho captain was lieaten on the lack and the lieetle dislodged. in his report to the Chief Entomolo gist of the Agricultural Department, Dr. Cook says of the Guatemalan ant that “like the human inhabitants of tropical countries, tho ants have the habit of taking a siesta.” That set tles it. The boll weevil is an Ameri can product, alive to the exigencies of the situation, and will soon catch on by going on its marauding expedition while the ant is wrapt in sinmlier. • ■ "6 • *Of the several notable addresses of Judge Parker within a recent time, one on “The Educated Man in Poli tics,” which was delivered as the hon orary Chancellor of Union College, embodies his idon of jioliticni partici pation, of the function of the true politician and public leader —and this idea is consistently ami strikiugly ex empliticd in his own public life. In the opening of his address he said : ’’Superficial observers of present 'political conditions, which too often disclose local leadership to be in the hands of men, who use the power they possess to accomplish re sults hostile to the public interests, frequently assert that there is no op portunity for the educated, thought ful. unselfish and independent man in politics, hut if snob persons would only sound the depths of political his tory the fact would be revealed to them that whenever a great question of public importance has arisen it has been presented and championed through the press and on the rostrum by the educated thinkers of the conn try. who, for the time being, are the real leaders, ami uuder whose banners the organization leaders hasten to marshal their forces lest their power be overthrown by the impelling force of an idea. ” “The impelling force of an idea” is u phrase of characteristic power. It is. aud particularly when taken with the context, suggestive of the man. It is almost a biography iu a phrase. Judge Parker has been the exponent of truth, of fearless and iudepeudent thought aud of Democratic principle iu politics. The impelling force of an idea, the impelling force of lofty inde pendence ,the impelling force of exal ted principle fearlessly proclaimed these have brought him to the fore aud commaud of the great party of the American people. He has uot come through the devious path of small politics. He has not come by chance, by luck, by favor. “Political oppor tuuities, ” appointments, State aud Federal honors, have not been accepted as aids or stepping-stones by him. He is less the creature of circumstances than any man now in public life. He represents the triumph of a principle resolutely and unremittingly pursued; the vindication of the most exalted idea of Democracy aud politics.
