THURSDAY, - Sept. 21, 19*5 The overcrowded .condition of the public and private schools demon strates the facLthat young America taken to education. The average scholars among them go to school, not at all unwillingly, hut with the pleas antest of autici|>atiouß. And why shouldn’t they ? Schooling has bceu made very attractive of late, and whether the youug people go there to work or to play r or merely to iwfh the tiino away, they have no difficulty iu hading the accommodations they de sire. Possibly it might be better for them if the non-edueatioual features were made less attractive and reduced iu uumher. Hut pedagogues think uot. They are satisfied that they have hit upon the ideal methods of teach ing the young idea to shoot. From experience they are qualified to judge, and although some of tho old-fashion ed “three K’s" sort may differ, their protests are given exceedingly little consideration. However, the new methods have not yet been given a fair trial; a decade or more will have passed before we shall be iu a posi tion to pass judgment upon them. In the meantime, patience. Your little homo paper may uot, be a “newsy sheet,’’ it may offend you simietimes. It may be “full of mis takes’’ for it is not infallible, hut your home paiier never loses interest in you. It chronicles your successes aud your sorrows wherever you may be. Those who would forget you but for the home paper are ever aud anon reminded of your existence by some item in the town paj>er where you apeut your boyhood days. Others may deceive aud defraud you, but the little home jper uever forgets. What do you give the editor in return for this constancy ? '■ ■- o —— Coach Reid, of Harvard, has ta booed tobacco aud denies its use to all members of the football squad. The weed in all its forms is forbidden dur iug the next two months, and any in fraction of this rule will mean tlie cancellation of the privilege usually giveu old players aud undergraduates who are interested iu the development of the eleven. Reid is a stickler for discipline, and it is safe to say that this latest order will he obeyed. o The HalimoreSuu advises that stub born jieople be managed as stubborn mules. “Applied to tins stubborn human creature it often succeeds quite as well. Where one is so stub born that he will uot move forward just turn him around aud all will go as desired.” ————©— ———- ”ltiain-in ttie-Face, who was one of tlie leading chiefs in tho Ouster mas sacre and is said to have )>ersoiially killed General Ouster, died at the Standing Rock Reservation, South Dakoa,September 12. He was 63 years old. o ' Medical science has discovered an anaesthetic which, when administer ed by surgeons, permits the painless cutting off of legs without putting the patient to sleep. Nothing is said about an anaesthetic for pulling peo ple's legs. o Washington is having an epidemic of typhoid, and thoie is a reported increase iu the number of victims. With allowance made for the recover ies, the increase in number of pa tients under treatineut is 279. 0 Smokeless powders are uot absolute ly smokeless, but give off a vapor that can be distinguished at a distance of 300 yards. —— - - o— —- Advertise your own town and push it hard, but leave the other fellow's town alone. It will take care of itself. Judging from the result of the Bal timore primaries “the people” are against the “ring” aud the Poe amendment. 0 The Baltimore Sun says the ma chine is still in control iu municipal | politics, and the sun “do” know. 0 I Baltimore had an election and the people voted.
