Minds of the school arc now absorbed in the joyous vaca tion days, at.il will be for a long time. Hut the day for more serious reflec tion will come sooner or later. They are admonished not to think that they can rest on the early laurels won in their career, but rather that the com pletion of their rural school life means t ie entrance into that great world of public existence and the assuming of the more serious responsibilities of procuring an honest livelihood There is one principal suggestion that which later impresses all older people. They would all like to live life over again so that they would ha e an opportunity to correct mistakes, whi h they discover only after it is too late to he of any profit to them. They realize too late the enormous respon sibilities which were once before them, hut are now, perhaps, far behind them. On the other hand the young gradu ates of today have all the possibilities in life before them. They have the great opportunity of continual choos ing in a perptual development. The great question now is, for gradua'e, how will you choose'' Will you take good aim at the best chances, or will you let them slip by and pick up the poorer opportunities? there are the high grades and the low grades. The whole world lias been observing the lack of choosers of the high grades. The rising generation seeks to avoid hard work. Too much j has been made <*f the kindergarten idea that, play is everything, and work, especially hard work, is to be avoided. Rut this is a fatally deceptive mistake. In this busy world, girls and hoys must acquire in the first place ability to write and to work hard, and for a suflieient length of time. Proper I success is impossible in any line with I out it. Distinction comes only to I those who work hard and love to do it. I Time to talk about a safe and sane I Fourth of July. j West Virginia is dazed by a debt of I $12,1HLT,924. Pshaw! Easily scared.! Aviator’s bride saw her husband fall. I Rarely eyewitnesses at anything of I the sort. The middies were ashore Saturday. | Looking through the Panama Canal? I PERHAPS. | As a Bryan follower why Secretary Daniels hasn't followed him is not clear. Also very provoking. Isn't it a great wonder the Court of Inquiry doesn’t hold Sunday sessions. Croat pity to lose one day in seven. With Children’s Day and Commence ments over, the town might have a breathing spell, if it were not for that everlasting court of inquiry. Truly life is one thing after another. The happy faces of so many parents coming away from these numerous school commencements during the evenings of the past two weeks are enough to make an envious, selfish bachelor walk the Hoor all night in compensation for the ease he thought he enjoyed when his neighbors were kept awake from other causes.—Cum berland Times. Protests made by women to the pay ment of taxes without the right to vote have long been a target for the paragrapher ami the professional joke smith, but if it were the other wav around; if men were taxed without being permitted to vote it is doubtful whether the satirist ami the funny-men would be quite so jovial. There can be no doubt, but what taxation without representation, whether of men or women, is tyranny. Next to our foreign relations, the subject that will most strongly engage the attention of the next congress will be the building up of our merchant marine. The United States is entering on a period of trade expansion that will make ships of American registry necessary. Only something like 16 per cent of our exports are carried in Amer- ican bottoms and a smaller percentage of our imports. This is an increase over recent years, by reason of change of foreign ships'to American registry since the repeal of the Panama canal tolls act. But we need a much greater increase in the number of American ships, and we are not going to get it unless the government goes into the shipping business or our shipping laws are revised.
