THE PR ESI HE ST’S APPEAL TO ■' REASON There can he but title opinion conccring the appeal of the Presi tlent to employes of the railways \yho threaten to strike. It is clear cut, conservative and conciliatory. It is in line with that portion of his high cost of living message to Congress dealing with economic necessities and sober and sane conduct. "We mobilized our man power for fighting,” says Mr. Wil son ; "let us now mobilize our brain power and our consciences for the reconstruction. If we fail it will mean disaster.” In agreement with all whfi have seriously studied the question-, Mr. Wilson says "primary step is to increase production anti fa cilitate transportation * * * and so as soon as possible relieve our people of the cruel burden of high prices. The railways are at the centre of this whole process.” Mr. Wilson calls attention to the fact that increase of wages will simply add to the high cost of liv ing. lie endeavors to quiet the threatening strikers by saying "I anticipate that legislation dealing with the future of the railroads will, in explicit terms, afford ade quate protection for the interests of the employes of the roads.” Rejection of Mr. Wilson’s plea and the ,new rate of wages pro posed by him and Mr. llines by the higher representatives of the railway shop crafts throws the decision of this important matter into the hands of alxtut 500,000 men, members of local railway unions in this country and Can t adu. now being taken, and upon the verdict rest issues which have a vital bearing either for good or evil on the future of this country. It is sincerely to he hoped that the decision of the men will be dictated by sanity and sound Americanism.—New York Herald. IT’S AN ILL WIND— Using a cyclone to boost the sale of War Savings Stamps is the way the Texas folks handle the thrift campaign. The cyclone wasn’t planned, of course, hut when it came through Mincoin and began shifting personal prop erty about, things just naturally seemed t fall in line for a little publicity for the savings move ment. A book of War Saving- Stamps blonging to Hilary Har man. of Mineola. was picked up in the gale and whirled fifty mile away to Talco, Titus County. It was found bv E. E. Dismlikes who lives near Talco and mailed back to Harmon. If Harmon had not put that money into stamps, of coqrse, there would have been no way of telling to whom it be longed. EMPIRE BUILDERS OF 1910 "If you sec an Englishman run ning down the street toward- the telegraph office, ten to one, there is a new-horn son at his house, ami the father is hurrying to make a reservation for him fifteen years hence at Etom or Rugby.” says a writer describing the import ance an Englishman places on the training his son is to receive. Ouitc properly, too. for what could be more important to the proud father of a son than the fu ture education of that son? Here in America it is not necessary for reservation in a picked school to be made so many years before hand, hut financial security is needed to guarantee that educa tion. The father who dreams great things for his little son will begin thinking now of the future of the bov. The government is as vital ly interested in each one of the twelve million citizens-to-be who each year open their eyes on America as are those twelve mil lion fathers, and just now it is of fering particularly attractive in vestments to take care of those babies. There are two plans that may prove inviting. The first calls for the pur-chasc of two one-thousand dollar Treas ury Certificates. An investment jof only $1,676 in Auugust, 1919, twill yield s2\ooo January, 1924. | This sum reinvested will yield j 53,000 when the boy is fifteen, The same result may be worked out ‘gradually by, a plan provides for the purchase of one W ar Savings Stamp a week or fifty a year dur ing the next ten year. Both these plans provide lib eral investment for the boy’s fu ture. Much smaller investments j would help him towards his goal. Ten W ar Savings Stamps a year ifor the next fifteen years would mean SI,OOO to him. Any young American with fighting blood In him would have a try at college with that sum in hand. ' Today is the time to plan for the future of that hoy. Will your son enter the class of empire in 1940? -1 1- WHAT EXCHANGES SAY <£, —— ■ 1 •V Men sen ger boyS in New York will probably laugh when they read that iAndy Carnegie started on a Job at SI.SO | a week. —Rochester Herald.
