WHY NCIIOOI.S COST MORE The rising cost of education lias given many citizens a good deal to think about. Very nat urally, too, because there is no public undertaking in which tin citizen should be more interest ed ; there is nothing which affect.- him more permanently than do the schools in his community. When he has reached an age at which they no longer touch him directly, they reach him through his children. Schools are tin means by which an orderly so cial progress is maintained. Whatever may he the story told by a comparison of educa tion costs today with those of an earlier time, the situation is not properly understood unless it is kept in mind that the school to day attempts to do infinitely more than did the school of three or four decades ago. There is almost no comparison between what the school considered its dutv to the child a generation ago and what it does for the hoy and girl of today. If it were nothing more than the fact that children today go to school until later in life than they did formerly, even that might he sufficient cause for what is mis takenly called the rising cost of education. As compared to the number of pupils who finished the eighth grade three decades ago, the number who go this far at the present time is astonishingly large. \\ e direct all their learning an 1 activities to the end that thev may become not merely intelli gent and understanding parents when this duty comes to them, hut we try to lay in the schools tin* proper foundation for intelli gent citizenship on their part Nor is our educational aim di rccted solely to giving these bov. ami girls something for the fu ture. Ihe school of today looks after the present needs of the child in even greater measure than did the school of yesterday. It tries to educate and train the pupil so that in the home he may he a happier and more desirable j member of .the family group. This is truly a great undertak ing. but it is the working ideal 1 of the modern school. And so when people talk about the rising cost of the modern school, they must not forget that it has set for itself a gigantic task, and that the accomplishment of this task is well worth all that is asked for it. r LLOYD GEORGE IS RIGHT “There is one fact.” said Lloyd r.eorge in a recent address before the House of Commons, “which has upset the balance of the rep aration commission and the bal ance of the League of Nations, and that is the absence of America.” Every day seems to bring new and stronger evidence that the United States Senate not only bludgeoned the cause of world stability but dealt a staggering blow to the commerce and in dustry of its own country when, for the sake of trying to bring ] about the political assassination of Woodrow Wilson, it rejected the Versailles pact and the League. Quite apart from the call of tin. spirit of America to help better the world, the situation when the treaty was rejected required that for its own sake America 1 should lend a hand to dressing ! the economic wounds of the 1 .world. America had performed gallantly, superbly and without , .THE EVENING CAEHaE AND MARYLAND GAZE! IE. ANN W OLIS, MARYLAND, MONDAY, Jl NE .*, thought of material reward in helping to stem the tide of bar barism. It had become the leadei of the moral forces of the world. As Lloyd George says it was “the only country that had no claims in respect to reparations. She was friendly to all countries that had claims. That was the element w’e relied upon to secure fair and impartial adjudication.” And the American senate made it appear that America failed the world when the world needed it. Naturally without the United States, powerful in trade and finance, the various agreements made are staggering along. With this country in the procession, as has been said repeatedly, world conditions would he infinitely more stable and many of the trials of business with its unem ployment and depreciated ex change would soon lx- but vague spots in the spectrum of mem ory. SOUTH AMERICAN GIRLS ARE CltAl*KHO\EI> EVEN TO TIIE MOVIES Cm 11*1 Go Out Without Mothers, Writes American Visitor AniUHemcntH for girls arc few and far between in South America. “You juxt cannot imagine life with none of the recreations to which you are ac cuHtomed at home.” writes Miss Helen Kennedy Stevens from JU unos Aires. “The movies art the only form of public amusement and no nenorita of any family can go without her mother. Young, unmarried women simply never go out of the house alone. The fun we have at home at picnics and going out in mixed parties is abso lutely unknown here.” If anyone question.; the value of the Young Women’s Christian Association in South America, continues Miss Stevens, one should see the bareness of the lives of the average Argentine girl and the necessity to have some thing with which to till her time. "The public has-been slow to realize the importance rif giving girls oppor tunity to learn to become bettor wives and numbers,” she writes. “Things are far from easy because at every step you have to combat popu lar public opinion which holds no place for women and their mental and physical development. Many South Americans are intense individualists. My sister’s little maid, for instance, sweeps out all the dust from my room on to the little balcony, it mat tering not at alt to her that the poo ale below arc sitting out on their bal cony. Those who labor with their hands are in one class and so in the store a saleswoman will not think of wrapping up a package for you.” To help South American girls de velop into better educated and help ful wives and mothers, the associa tion operates centers, camps and classes. The Y. \V. A. camp near Beunos Aires is the first girls’ camp n Argentina. Among the prominent speakers at its forums recently has been the head of the Observatory of he University of LalMata and the edi tor of the leading paper in Qeunos Aires. Miss Stevens was formerly director if the Speakers Bureau at the Na •ional Board in New York. CHARLES M. CARLSON IM (iI.OICKSTKK MTRKKT CONTRACTOR uml BUILDER Rllmitri< ( lintlhllv lilvrn.
