r ■ THE DAILY BARKER Entered a* second cltn matter at the poetoffiee at Cambridge, Maryland. Thb Daily Banicm w published every afternoon, except Sunday, at 112 High street, Cambridge, Maryland, by WEBB & WEBB Editors and Proprietors Cambridge, Md., March 11, 1913. IMPROVED MAIL SERVICE" Splendid Opportunity To Get Balt imore Mail Much Earlier in the Day. If the investigation which the Poetoffiee Department will make in a short time proves satisfactory, there is every prospect that, in stead of waiting until twelve o’clock at noon for mail, patrons of the Cambridge poetoffiee will get their daily papers in time to read them at breakfast, and their business mail several hours earlier than at present. The service which the Eastern Shore Development Steam ship Co. is now giving enables the shippers of freight to deliver it at the Company’s receiving depot in Baltimore until six o’clock in the evening, and it is delivered in Cam bridge the next morning at or be fore six o’clock. Those who have recently had experience with the delay of the other boat by fog, low tides, etc., realize that this means much to the local stores. In connection, however, with the proposed new mail route, it should be borne in mind that not only will Cambridge benefit, but persons all along the Cambridge and Seaford branch would receive their mail several hours earlier than at pres ent. The following schedule shows the changes which would be made If the proposed service is adopted, and it is expected that the Cam bridge Board of Trade and all of onr business men will stand solidly together in an effort to secure it: Via Eastern Shore. Editor of The Sun: Sir. —I have thought several times since Mr. Linthicum Intro duced the bill in reference to the motorboats that I would write The Sun on this subject, and am in duced to do so by the letter of Feb ruary 27, from that wonderful man, Capt. Vivian Phillips, who has the welfare of the public at heart to such an extent that he would have Congress pass laws to protect his interest in his business, which is the tugboat business, but would lead the people to believe that he wanted to protect them against pos sible danger. It was my privilege to read that bill, and Mr. Linthicum was very particular in presenting this bill to say that it was gotten up by the tugboat men of Baltimore city. Now, it does not take a man as wise as Solomon to see through this whole thing, particularly when Mr. Phillips says the small schoooners pay $1.50 and that it is worth $2 to do the work. Anyone can see that Mr. Phillips Is one of those big-hearted fellows by reading his letters. He would also have you believe that the captains of the bay vessels are a particularly hard class of people to deal with; that it is asi much to collect a bill as it is to do the work, and 25 per cent, he never gets. Poor man! What a deplorable state of affairs for such a man as Captain Vivian Phillips, a man of such wonderful ability, hav ing to make a living by working for such people as he would have the public believe these bay captains are. I would suggest that he go in poli tics and become a leader in his ward or go in the saloon business. They are the chaps that wear a large dia mond in their shirt and can live the life of a gentleman, and not be pa rading around under false colors and making it harder for honest men to make a living, or men that stay out in the cold and sit up nights plying the Chesapeake and its tributaries, when Captain Phillips is home in his warm bed. Now as to the licensed men he would have you carry, how about them? Why there are numbers of ! them living in Baltimore city that get up at 5 o’clock in the morning this season of the year,, eat their i breakfast and put their dinner in a lunch box, go aboard of some ittlle old tugboat and run around the har bor all day, and go home again at dark, and they have never been out of sight of the smoke of the city in their lives. But they are licensed men, perhaps for Patapsco river or down the bay as far as Sandy Point which is 25 miles. And Capt. Phil ■ lips does not hesitate to tell you these men have to serve three years to obtain this wonderful Informa tion so they could get licenses; that a captain who trades from Phila -1 delphia down to the Chesapeake and its tributaries, and on down through the North Carolina sounds and their tributaries, or anywhere there Is a load and water enough to float his ’ vessel is incompetent, and that it * Is not safe to get near one of these . vessels, if you happen to have a mo tor in your yawl, without having some of these licensed men aboard. I wish to state for the benefit of the public that I am in a vessel of 210 tons registers and that I went from Newbern to Morehead City, a distance of forty miles with a sev en and a half horse power engine WE GIVE ** GREEN TRADING STAMPS Phillips Hardware Co. I will also state that I know Captain Blake and read his letter in The Sun, and it was a true statement, and I failed to see the amusement in it that Captain Phillips claims he does. I would also tell the public that Captain Phillips’ statement that the fines on motorboats since January 1 have amounted to SIO,BBO is un true,as people who read the papers will remember that quite a good WEHAVE I WOOLENS | NOBODY ELSE CAN SHOW | ® om * Our Store and Get Measured For Yeur Spring | and Summer Clothe? 8 to,v price voa 'S/ O Being Exlusive Local Dealers for These Famous Chicago Tailors 8 j Ed V.
