THE DAjLY Entered as second postoffice at Cambridge, The Daily Ban nek ery afternoon, except High btreet, Cambridge, Marylai^Hß WEBB & WEBB Editors ana Proprietors CAMBRIDGE. MD., NOV. 6, 1914 telag's Eectton. Many of our Republican friends seem to be getting much consolation out of the fact that the Republicans carried New York and Pennsylvania, and, like drowning men, it is not sur prising that they grasp at straws or anything that offers to stem, even temporarily, the tide of demoraliza tion and disastrous defeat with which they have met during the past two or three years. As a matter of fact, however, the defeat of the Democratic party in New York had but little, if any, na tional political significance. The dis closures that followed the break between Governor Sulzer and Tam many Hall, of which Charles F. Mur phy is the head, could not fail to re sult in decisive action at the hands ol an indignant electorate. When it was shown, as it appeared to be clearly, that almost every branch ot Government with which Tammany was connected, was contaminated, that officers. State contracts, judicial nominations, etc., were bargained for the same as stocks and bonds, ana other classes of merchandise, there could be but one result at the next elction. Let us hope that the Dem ocrats of New York will now place th leadership of the party in the hands of men of the highest integri ty, who can be depended upon to use their power patriotically instead oi making it a basis for pilfering ana spoliation. Pennsylvania is naturally a Re publican State; the bosses there still continue to have a strangle hold up on the masses of the people. The re cent rgistration showed a plurality of Republican voters over all the oth er parties combined, and it was hard ly to bo expected that the opposition, divided into camps hostile to each other, could overcome the com mbn foe. The contractor politicians and all other influences that are op posed to government of. for, and by the people, fought side by side to accomplish the results, and the re sult would only have been surprising had it been other than it was. Despite the unsettled business con ditions that naturally result from a change in the tariff: notwithstanding ~ the conditions In financial circles that followed the first change in the Currency Laws of the country for a half a century: notwithstanding the fact that the Commerce of the world tina been paralized during the past few months as the result of the greatest war the civilized world has ever known, the Democratic party has Increased its majority in the Senate and still controls the House. The followers of Col. Roosevelt seem to have fallen all over them slves in. an effort to get away from the leadership of the gallant Colonel, and it is safe to say that a large ma jority of them are now housed in the ranks of the Republican party. With these conditions existing, the confi dence of the nation in the adminis I YOJfc BUSINESS STRENGTH I ; is greatly enhanced if your bankers are stu- | | dents of local conditions. This was a county-wiCo measure and was badly needed. The Canal issue seems to have been quite generally misunderstood.and we can not but believe that had the people had the opportunity of carefully ex amining the question, they would have foreseen the great business de velopment certain to follow and the consequent increase in the assessa ble basis, particularly in Cambridge and Lower Dorchester. o The annual exhibition of horticul tural products at the Armory next Wednesday and Thursday is an event of more than average Importance.and is deserving of the active support and co-operation of the public. These exhibitions have the effect of stimulating the people in all sections of our county to greater effort, and result in increased yields off of the same amount of land. They are the same in principle as the great ex hibitions of other business and can not fail to have the same results. From the exhibit next week will be selected the exhibit which will be sent to Baltimore for exhibition at the State Horticultural Show. o —There will be preaching at Trinity M. E. Church, at Seward’s, Sunday afternoon, at 3 o’clock. The public is invited to attend.
