WEBB & WEBB Editors and Proprietors WHAT IS THE DISTANCE FROM EASTON HERE Two Weeks Ago Two Easton Ped estrians Arrange*! A Trip From Easton To Cambridge And Back But It seems Slow Hi Materializ ing. The folic ,ing article appeared in one of the city papers about two weeks ago, but thus far the “hikers' have not reported: Easton’s sporting fraternity is all agog and neither the referendum on the Racing bill nor the close ap proach of the baseball season is the reason. Even the discussion wheth er Frank Baker, the heavy-hitting third baseman of the New York Yanks, will retire from the diamond or continue third basing—a subject that is revived each spring—has lost some of its heat. Here is the reason. Anthony Capozio. one of Easton’s leading merchants and a veteran of the World War, and Joseph Foster, head prescription clerk in A. C. Lewis’ drug store, former champion short distance runner of North Caro lina, are going to engage in a 72- mile walking contest. Capozio, because of his armf train ing and experience in making long hikes in France, believes he is about the best distance walker in Talbot county, according to his friends. The pending contest arose through Capozio telling several acquaintances whom he met in Lends’ drug store a few nights ago how far and how well he could hike. Foster was within hearing and while agreeing with Capozio had some good things to say concerning his own prowess along this line. It is not chronicled just how the discussion proceeded, but it became interesting and wound up by each betting SIOO to SSO that he could beat the other. News of the wager socn spread among the sporting folks and W. W. Spence, cashier of the Talbot Bank, was called in to held stakes. Each contestant wrote a check and then the friends of each and others, who considered only the form of the pair, began making sidebets. Since the wager between the two contestants was made these bets have grown in number, and it is safe to say some hundreds of dollars will change hands on the outcome of the hike. Capozio, true to his soldier instinct will carry a pack weighing 50 .pounds on his back —he insists on tlrs— while Foster will travel light. The course will be from Easton to Cam bridge and return over the State road. The start will he made from In front of the Court House in Eas ton and the turn will be in front of the Court House in Cambridge, Judges will I e appointed and they will follow the hikers in automobiles to see that none of the rules of the contest are violated by either con testant. It has been stipulated that neither shall ;ut across fields nor run any portion of the distance. If is safe, to say that numerous persons who have made wagers on the result will make the trip in automobiles anu, if necessary, cheer on the man they are backing to win. COL SISK WITHDRAWS FROM DEMOCRATIC RACE Says He Will Not Enter Congres sional . Fight On Shore—Wants Party Harmony. Preston, Md., April 10.—Col. Al bert W. Sisk today announced he would withdraw from the race for the Democratic nomination for Con gress. “I have decided not to enter the Democratic primaries to be held May 3,” he said. “To do so would mean a struggle between two fractions of the party, the aftermath of which would mean defeat of the party at the November election. I would not Jeapordize the interests of the party to this extent to gratify my person al ambition. Furthermore, I said at the beginning I would not be a can didate of any fraction and that if I could not represent the whole Demo cratic party I would not be a candi date at all. Some elements of the party have seen fit to take advantage of this attitude on my part and have brought about a situation in the party fraught with danger both to the Congressional and Senatorial nominees. As a loyal Democrat, I will not assume the responsibility of continuing this condition and thus forego my own ambition that the success of the party may be made more certain.” People’s Loan, Savings & Deposit Bank The River Of Money The banks along the river are to keep the water in its proper course. It is a natural place for the water to run. The natural place for money is in the bank. The natural place for money to circulateis through the lank. Money scattered promiscuously does nobody good, but like the river in the desert becomes absorbed and dis sipated. The bank gathers together the funds of a community and loans it out where it will do the most good for all concerned. Do your part by directing your money into the proper channel. Scandal In G. 0. P.
