The I Jail 1 ' Ba^nek The Daily Banner, is published every afternoon except Funday a* 112 High Street, Cambridge, Mil. CAMBRIDGE, ML., MAR. 4, 1922. Entered as second class matter in the Postofflce at Cambridge, Md. i WEBB & WEBB Edit oil Ana Proprietors. The Chamber of Commerce has sent out a notice to all of its mem bers asking that they vote upon the question of the bond issue of $175,- 000 for a new high school building for Cambridge: also whether or not they favor improving the present high school building. Every m ber of the Chamber of Commerce should vote upon this question, the management is absolutely within its rights in asking the membership how it stands and no member should hesi tate about voting his or her senti ments; no member should hedge up on the question, vote one way or the other; one member has just as much right to an opinion upon the question as another and the management has no desire to influence any member, it simply wants an expression from its membership. Idealism or materialism is a mat ter of temperment, of spiritual in sight. or the lack of it. Adherents of these opposing philosophies of life are and every will remain in opposi tion to each other. Becoming in terested in civic or town development will not change a man’s basic inter pretations of life. The natural idealist —and there is no such thing as an artiflcally pro. duced one—is bound to view the: world as a plastic thing in the hands of human beings. He sees men dominating matter. He knows that copper is mixed in Montana, manu factured in Connecticut, and sold in Texas'; that mahogany logs are cut in Honduras, shipped to New Orleans and converted into furniture in Grand Rapids, and sent back to New Orleans for sale. He is not deluded “ by ponderous materialism, masquer ading as the “£cbnoinic basis of his tory” nor will he concede that city was ever built bv material things. But there are many people who have not clarified their economic or their social thinking even to the point of conciously understanding, their own basis of judgment in; weighing the facts of city growth.. When such men drop into community existance they are without chart oi guide in their day’s work. They like the mental warmth and suffus ing glow of inspirational speeches | based on clear idealism but they! muddle along in a hazy' effort to adopt their every day thinking to that- utter materialism which says , that a city grows because of its pos session of material things. Quite naturally a city, with citizens of this type, meander all over the economic. and socialogical lot. There can be no consistant administrative policy, j Sometime the town acquires a re-ac., tionary reputation without intending; to be conservative and just because| it lacks a definite intention of anyj sort. Public criticism, once aroused : blindly slashes at the fury. As for; itself, the town is confused by what | seems to be public ingratitude. Yetj the solution to all our troubles i could be found quickly if we could | bring ourselves to analyze our own i basic thinking. —R. L. (1> Mr Robbins will you tell us who is behind this proposed school bond issue? (2 I Has the School Board endors ed the proposed loan? I ask this question because I should think leg islation concerning public school af fairs should start with the School Board has not endorsed the proposed bond, issue. t 3) Since this matter has the en dorsement of the Chamber of Com merce will you advise me how many members of the Chamber of Com merce were present at the meeting when the loan bill was endorsed? (4 f Can you tell me what effect this and other bills will have upon the tax rate in the future. 1 have been told that the amount raised by taxation last year at the rate of $1.60 on the SIOO fell short about $75,000 of being enough to pay the year’s bills. It this is true, does it not mean that the rate will have to be increased next year about 40 cents on the SIOO to take care of our regular expenses unless they are cut down very much; the Cook bill will add about 5 cents additional to the rate; the S2OO 000 bond issue will add about 6 cents fore for interest alone, not counting the sinking fund which should be not less than 5 cents per SIOO, and I am told that the town proposes to increase 5 or 10 cents, now Mr. Robbins, if you add to all of this nearly 7 cents more for in terest and 6 cents for sinking fund for your school bill will you not have a tax rate in Cambridge of $3,44 on the SIOO, and of $2.64 in the county? I , (5) Do you consider t|iis a tax rate? j Now, Mr. Robbins, this informa ’ tion is not asked for the purpose of nagging or fault finding or because I am opposed to progress but for the sincere purpose of getting informa tion and I hope that you will show me the courtesy of answering each question separately —TAXPAYEß. NEW STAR AGNES AYRES IN “cAPPY RICKS” ' ' ' Agnes Ayres, Paramount’s newest star will have, cause to remember her last appearance as a leading woman iin a Paramount picture. After returning from : from the locations Miss Ayres receiv ed instructions to report in Holly wood to begin her first picture as a star. The “Cappy Ricks” company work ed day and night for a week, with only a few hours between scenes, to I complete the episodes in which Miss ■ Ayres appears- The part of Florrie Ricks, heroine of the Kyne story, supplies Miss Ayres with one of her I best screen characterizations.
