We hear of several complaints of
the depredations of hogs, running at
large in the city limits of Keytesville.
Marshal Finnell should see that they
are either kept . up, or put them in
the pound. No use having a hog
law if it is not enforced.
- Major A. W. McCampbell, of the
Guthridge Mills neighborhood, drop
ped in to see us last Tuesday. He
says the tobacc crop in his vicinity
is good and being housed rapiply
and is curing in good condition. He
says the Democracy is standing firm
for Mansur and will vote for him to
a man.'

We change the publication day of
the Courier this week from Friday
to Thursday, and will hereafter go
to press at 7 o'clock every Wednes
day evening. By this arrangement
the Cockier will reach every post-
office in the county, except Prairie
Hill, Bynumville and Wein on the
day it is published.

We regret to learn of the serious
illness of Mrs. Lydia Scott,
mother to C. S. Scott and sisters,' of
this place, at the home of her son,

Vaughan, left yesterday morning
for Carthage to attend their mother
in her sickness, her ailment being a
very severe attack of typhoid fever.
The Missouri conference held at
St. Joseph, adjourned last Tuesday.

Ben Gardner, who has been work
ing in J. C. Beasley's livery stable,
stuck a pitchfork in one of the hind
legs of a cow, belonging to W. C.
Gaston, Monday evening, while the
animal was in the livery stable the
door having been left open. The
cow ran out and the fork was drag
ged, in her leg, down near Uncle
Hack Hawkins, where tt was re
moved by a colored man. Gardner
skipped Monday night.
Mrs. Ross Glenn nee Moore, wife
of Dr. Glenn, of Shannondale, is
reported as being very ill this week.
Her brother, Sheriff Moore, and
sister, Mrs. Wicks, of this ) place,
went over Sunday. The Sheriff re
turned Monday ; eveninsr and Mrs.
Wick remained; Dr. Dewey has
been called in consultation. He re
ports Mrs. Glenn as being complete
ly paralyzed, a very rare occurrence
for one so young, and on this ac
count has some hopes of her recove
ry.

gone to housekeeping in W. E.
Hyde's residence, recently vacated
by Geo. C. Martin and family, who
have moved to their property pur
chased of Chas. Veatch. .
John C. Naatz is circulating a pe
tition asking to be postmaster at In
dian Grove, vice L. B. Henderson,
aosconded. Jonn would make an
efficient postmaster, and is a staunch
Democrat possessed of true merit as
a business man.

The private premium offered by
Messrs. " Finnell & Parks, to be
awarded at the Keytesville Fair is
for the man who has lived the great
est number of years in Chariton
county, instead of for the oldest man
who is a citizen of Chariton county.
Miss Moliie Grimstead commenced
her school at the Whiteside school
house, five and a half miles southwest
of Keytesville, on Monday. This is
Miss Mollie's first attempt at bend
ing young ideas, and we trust that
her efforts may prove successful.
Mrs. Wm. Lessley and Mrs. Jas.
Myers and several of their children,
also Robert Tlolley went down to
Howard county, ' last Tuesday to
attend the double wedding of Jonas
Robb, and his sister, Miss Lucy, who
are a nephew snd niece of Mrs.
Myers.
The series of meetings, protracted
from the Baptist association, closed
Sunday night, resulting in four ad
ditions to the church, to whom the
ordinance of baptism was' administer
ed at Bartz' mill, on Sunday after
noon, by tne Baptist pastor, itev. J.
W. Keltner.

Emauuel & Son. returned from Chi
cago last Monday where he purchas

of every article usually found in a
first class dry goods store, .with an
eye single to the wants of their many
customers. .
The Brunswicker appeared in a
new and neat form last week, having
changed from a nine column folio to
a seven column quarto. Tne office
has made itself the recipient or a
hew press and folder, all of which
manifests thrift and - enterprise.

Messrs. T. E. Waugh and C B.
Allen, of Yellow Creek township,
were in Keytesville on Tuesday.
They tell us all the Democrats i n I
their township of their knowing will
vote for Mansur except probably, T.
J. L. Hutcheson, and that they have
rigged him so much about his bolt,
and have threatened him so strongly
of turning him over to the Republi
cans that he has about quit coming
to Rothyille, and hopes are enter
tained that he will come around all
right before the ides of November.-!
So mote it be, Tom is too crood a
Democrat to sulk through this cam
paign.
Miss Nettie Cuddy, daughter of
James Cuddy, of Missouri township,
left her home last Tuesday under
circumstances that indicate an elope
ment, though her betrothed was not
seen about the premises that day.
A young gentleman by -the name of
Cooper, had been paying some at
tention to the young lady in opposi
tion to the wishes of the father and ;
to break off the engagement he had
made arrangements to sent the
daughter to school at Glasgow. On
Sunday last her father heard she did
not intend to go to school and talk
ing to her on the subject she ac
knowledged that she and Young
Cooper intended to marry.
The father also discovered her
trunk had been packed and he was
keeping a sharp lookout, to prevent
an elopement. About 2 o'clock Tues
day evening he left the house, re
turning some three hours afterward,
to find his daughter had gone. She
took a valise with her but no one saw
her leave the house, neither was any
one seen come to the house. Since
then nothing has been heard of the
daughter, but the father is satisfied
she carried out a preconceived ar
rangement and has gone with young j
Cooper. She is not yet 18 years of
age. She was a great, favorite with
her father, and he is much mortified
at her absenting herself in the way 1
she has.
la Memorials.
In noticing the unexpected death of
Miss Oliie Veatch last week, occur
ring so soon after the settlement of
her father's family in Comanche
county, Kansas, we had meagre
panic ulars concerning the sad occur
rence. Since then we have received
a letter from Miss Addie Veatch,
aunt to the deceased, from which we
make the following extract for the
benefit of the many friends of the
family here. ; . .
"She was sick only one week and
was very bad from the nrst. 5ne
was delirious most of the time and
talked almost incessantly of her
friends and playmates in Keytesville.
During the last two days she did not
recognize any of the family. ' The
day preceding her death she repeat-
ed the Lord's prayer in a clear and
and distinct voice, and tried to sing
"Jesus, Lover of My Soul," but
only sang a few lines. She died on
the evening of August the 31st,
peacefully and without suffering.
She was only sixteen years old. She i
had made friends all through the
neighborhood, and during her ill
ness there was no lack of sympathy I
and help. She was buried at Nesca-1
tiuga, twelve miles from here." We
can scarcely realize that uiiie is
dead. We had known her intimately
since her childhood. She pos sessed
many admirable traits, was kind res- j
pectful and affectionate to ever)
one. Loved her parents , relative s
and schoolmates devotedly. On bid
ding her friends good-bye at Keytes
ville depot before leaving for Kan
sas, she was impressed to tell them
she would never see them again.
May this sad dispensation of Provi
dence, prove beneficial to loved ones
that are lingering on the shores of
time, and may all meet with the
happy throng where parting is un
known. .. .
