To of tho jurors on tho Foster murder
trial in New York City were opposed to
finding him guilty in the Qrst degree, and
held out until they wcro "smoked out' by
their ten opponents. The New York S'mn
tells this story:
The jurors were all men of wives and
families, and were already heartily tired
of their long imprisonment. They deter
mined lo make a new move to relievo mo
situation. It was discovered that tho two
obstinates were non-"smokists," whore
upon tho leader of the convicting party
supplied a cargo of ammunition, in tho
shape of twonty-tlvu cents Havana cigars,
and proposed to

All ten fell to smokini;. Tho room was
small and badly ventilated, Tho opposi
tionists were fut, heavy, short-winded men,
