A NAKltOW OUAOE HOAD.
Howard Schuyler, Secretary of the
Denver and Itio Grande (Narrow-
gauge) railway company, has published
the following concerning this, the long
est line of narrow-gauge yet projected:
"Impressed with the importance of the
' new principle, the economy of ita con
struction and operations, and its
1 adaptability to roads in mountainous
' regions, a company was formed last
'year to build a line with a gauge of
1 three feet, from Denver, Colorado,
' southward along tho base of the
'llocky mountains, and through
'the valley of the lUo Grande,
' to HI l'aso in Mexico, a distance
' of nearly niuehuudrcd miles. Capital
' was very quickly subscribed, tnd the
' road commenced in December last.
' Work has been progressing so rapidly
' that by August tho first eighty miles
' section will bo completed and in oper-
'ation, tho first road of that gauge in
the country Ueing so far distant, but
.'littlrt attention lm.i been attracted to
' in the cast, though the enterprise of its
' management certainly deserves notice.
'New patterns of engines and of rolling
' slock, and patterns of iron bridges, have
had to be devised which should se
'curo the greatest strength and carry
'iug capacity consistent with a
' minimum weight of material,
' while the form should not vary so
'greatly as to conflict with the prejudices
1 in lavor of existing patterns. Tho re
' suits, wo think, have been most favor
' able. We arc enabled to make pas-
' sengers fully as comfortable and give
' them ns much room as a Pullman
1 drawing-room on the l.SA gauge, while
' the siiueil to be obtained will fall but
. ,. .. .... ,, , . , , ,
'little, ll at all, below that on tho broad-
, ... ., , ,
ur gauges. o eonliilcntly expect
' even on the short section to bo coin
4 pleted this summer, to make such a
'showing as to establish the 15-feet
' gauge as pre-eminently the 'gaugo of
1 the future for the railways of this
' country, or at least of tho new West.
