soon Locarno tho rule among tho moro in-
intelligent grower, ami thl wn followed
by the system known as rlean culture, or
what might be called constant culture.
Thi, like many other extreme measures,
led to very discouraging results in many
instance that came under inv observation
amounting to tho lot of from ono third to
one-half of the cron. Homo grower, not
content with tho frcouont disturbance
of tlio surface-soil, bv horse tools, from tbn

In the fall, would again begin cultivating
in tlio spring, until the plant were in
blossom. This, of course, would disturb
and dlsplaco the surfaco roots of the
plants, on which the fruit was dependent,
i'he inevitable conscoucnco of such it
method of culture would bo n very small
crop of small borrics. This, in" manv
case., brought about a reaction. and a null
for the other extreme, with the cry that
" no culture and weeds was n better plan
than thorough culture.
Jien wiin nanus oi close observation
soon found that to produco tho largest
yield of bcrrle, tho clean culturo was all
important the first year, but na culti
vation or disturbing of the surface-soil be
tween the row should bo civen in the
Spring of the second vcar, or not until the
crop was gathered. 'I hen was tho time to
mako preparation for a crop of fruit for
tho following vear. bv a thorough surfaco
disturbance, removing all weeds and
grais at tho same time.
btrawberrv-growers nro freouentlv sur-
Sriscd nnd disappointed to find in the
pring of tho year, when the frost leaves
tho ground, that tho "stools" aro badlv in
jured from the cll'ects of alternate freez
ing and thawing.
The worst effect from this causo is like
ly to happen from Miort warm i-pella in
reoruary or .Mnrch, just enough uthaw
an Inch or two of tlio surface. Tho ex
pansion caused by this surface thawing
will over the roots, leaving tho stools on
tho tirfaeii without bold or support, mid,
as it matter of course, such stools will pro
duce little or no fruit. On flay ground
even thorough drainago dos not always
remedy this, especially if tho frost or cold
weather sets in soon alter a heavy rain
storm, while tho ground is wet.
One. of the important matters then
to bo attended to by strawberry-growers
at thit season of tho year is to mako
such preparations as to prevent the possi
bility of tl:a frequent alternate freezing
and "thawing. In tactions of country
where snow fall early in December anil
remains on tho ground in a body until the
Spring fairly opens, there is no danger to
bo apprehended from surfaco thawing.
Hut in Xow-Jerscy, Delaware, Maryland,
or Virginia, the covering of snow cannot
bo relied upon, and artificial means must
bo resorted to for protecting tlio vines.
Tho best possible way to do this is to
mulct) tlio beds Willi salt, hay, wheat, or
ryu straw, and if none of theso aro nc
cossiblo then leaves gathered from the
woods will do instead. AVhcn
leaves aro used, then a
sprinkling of soil will bo necessary to pre
vent tho leaves from blowing about. Tho
mulching material may be put on tho beds
at any time from now'tintll the middle of
December, or even later. It should bo
spread evenly, and in quantity just enough
to cover tho vines. Thero is nothing
gained by quitting on a very heavy mulch.
In garden culturo n light coating of liorso
manure will answer an excellent purpose,
acting as a mulch and fertilizer at the
samo timo. Tho manuro is not practical
in Hold culture, from tho fact that tho
mulch is lust as important in tho spring as
lit the winter.
In March or April men go over tho bedo
with wooden rakes, carefully drawing ths
hay or straw otl'irom tho vine toward tho
spaces between tho rows, and settling tho
hay under tlio leaves, to bo left thoro un
til tho borrics aro gathered. Tins summer
mulch, in tuo lirst place, Keeps tno ground
moist and stirfaco loose, preventing to
somo extent tho growth of weeks, whilo at
tho samo time, tho berries nro kept clean
and free trom lino sand, which is a very
serious matter with strawoerry-grower
who cultivate their berries on sandy
ground, without mulching. In fact, on
light sandy oil, summer mulching is ten
times as important as winter mulching.
