The scliool-room should not M*pt4*sei*t an abfolute monarchy, it should ra'lie* be a constitutional monaitfiy. More advanced educationalistß hold that i* ahoiild border on the republican form of government. Students need a guiding band, anil while a certain amount of lihertv eln uld be given, they must be made t<> feel that there is a superior governing p wer. to which they muat submit. This done and goon they become convinced that it ia to their best interests to assist Ibe teacher in the development of the facnl ties. A conscientious pupil, (and nearly all pupils can be trained to become largely conscientious.) begins to feel, after a little, the awakening of powers within him. anti as the life springs begin to flow he rouses to the fact that educa tion is not tso much the amount of mathematics, language or science one imbibes as the development of tho-c powers to be gained bv the pursuit of those studies. It is then he concedes the right of direction to the teacher; it is then thev unite efforts for the de velopment of the highest powers of the pupil, and the true teacher is in his cle ment. The work of a school is. or should he. divided in a teacher’s mind tl>u*: reci tation, study, recreation. The re-cita'inn is not of |>aramntint importance. By it the teacher tests the pupil’.- kn iwle 'g* of facts he should have a* q<pre.|, Mia Tm dlity ami accuracy of expression, his re tentive power, bis attentive rapidity of thought, etc, etc. Recreation is not play, hut incltide auch work as music, gymnastics, calis thenics, story-telling, etc., ete. stem! The study period is prnbab'v the greatest cross to the teacher, w hhe i' i the gteatrs - benefit to the pupil Ii i just as neeecotry to my mind—a** ! more neces-ary, tlt ■ t child should study well, that he should recite well Then i ist'i n h • himself m kc* the ef fort, all external support being with drawn, then that he at tubs toward per faction, then his miml and soul a*ei t themselves. To work well he must hold all impulse to idle or plav at In* , a either by direct effort of wll, nr i*r->tl desire to please, co* quer ihe ta-k Tie first great need of the chilil is the con trol Of his Will power; he espeoudh neetls this seif-contr I. (7fiit.fr usually enter scho’tl with will strung r to control oilier* than tn control them selves. The main use of the stu lv li no is to lead the children Into hah'ts of atten tion and precision and self-control, in the use of eyes. toilytle, hands and and the end is the iiiixruiiini aueitpd of work in the minimum spm;** **f tunc. It matters not the cnnwled cm ilffrn of a school room, the must tike great care, e-pecially in primary grades, that the external emidi ions for stinh are good. The air should be fresh, th* studv class s remote as possible frunT' the recitation class; teacher anti pupils should mo-lu ate their voices so as not to dia'raci. Study tla*B should sit tn restful posi tion. so that little change lie needed, and above all they should be limited a* to time. Take for example a class of fifteen In arithmetic ; require a given number of examples in a limited time. The length of time should be that required bv the majority of the class. There will a* ways he a few who will complete their work before the expiration of fine. These are emphatically the greatest responsibility of the teacher, and their cases involves the greatest amount of study. If they work rapidly but care lesslv it should be done over; if it he satisfactory, then tlie pupil must b*' given employment for the remainder of the study time. It would bo mental suicide to neglect it. Th-swork is known to normal teach ers as “Busy Work ” If this spare tim>- be not pleasantly nnd profitably em ployed, you make for yourself unueties sary trouble and place a premium on confusion. Now watch the effect of ties busy Work. Those who flu sh fir-t have a conscious glow of strength, feeli* g'• at their industry lisa been revard*-*!. Tie others desire the plea-ur* Cite few have deserved and double the energy plae* and upon their vrork. When the. time comes when all the class produce nea* and accurate woik. you simply increa-e the amount of work ami the pro.-et-s be gins again. For such work to be *u. ces fu', c - dren must understai and dead* what y u* standard of excellence is. All falling oil should bo shown amt proven to the pup 1 and be punished by loss of busy work, and niad • to do over ponily done w*> k Buch punisliment is better than k*** \ - ing in after school, or at recess. Etch effort to reach the standard, sln-ipd re eeive honest and fair commendation. Keep up the child’s courage. I’rai**- the eff *rt, will, desire, but do not pra's*- un worthy results. Each learner niu-t decide for lom-eli what “busy woik” shall consist of Certainty it must havereducti*<nal value, drawing, board denotations, map •haw ing, anagrams, lustoiiial ami gcoiraph ical, puxz es, etc, etc. Any of these it the children like them The drawing and coloring of race, government, pro duct inn,and teligiou- tuaps.al-o campanil and settlement map*, is cxi-elleut work These may be franc and or mounted for the room walls, as a reward for work well done. Anagrams may as well be made as bought, from the simple t r a to Simon “Peter in Tear**” ami the selecting of letters and the marking of words is a healthful and agreeabie exercise. His torical, grammatical, scientific, and bio graphical puzzles are to lie found In magazines and newspapers, and should be stlected with reference to the knowl edge of the class. Reading matter judiciously selected is a great gain to pupils in the grammar grades, it should always he such as to give pupils a laste for good reading. Care should be taken that the rmpils do not take advantage of having some liberty in their work. But over-haste and carelessness seem to me to bo more easily dealt with than imhflerenee and waste of time. The object of such a course of woik is to keep a ! l the time of the pupils occupied, and occupied hap pily ami to some purpose. We too often put a premium on idle ness, instead of industry.
