ALMOST A TRAGEDY. VALERIAN VERSUS BELLADONNA- Uonant aid Lady Lake Shaken from Center to liircumfrence in Oonse qnenoe of Two Ladies Taking Be’ladonna for Valerian. A remarkable occurrence reached Ocala Monday which came near ending the lives of two estimable la dies of Conant, midway between South Lake Weir aßd Lady Lake. The ladles in question are Miss Dr. Worcester and Miss West. It seems that last Saturday morning there was to be a meeting of the Christian Endeavor Society at Lady Lake, in which Dr. Worcester was to take a prominent part. Before leav ing her home to drive to Lady Lake she took up a vial supposed to contain valerian, of which she partook to quiet and strengthen her uerves. By the time the lady reached Lady Lake she knew something unusual was the matter with her, so informed her friends and asked to be put to bed and a doctor sent for. Dr. Merrell, of the village, promptly responded, and when made known the nature of the case at once deter mined the lady had taken poison in stead of valerian. Drs. Parker and McNamara, of la*cs burg, were summonsed, and they worked over Dr. Worcester all that af ternoon and night before they could pronounce her out of danger. Now comes another remarkable part of this exciting and daugcrous episode to human life. No sooner had Dr. Worcester left home than a frieud and companion, who lives with her, Miss West, en tered the office and seeing the vial on the table aud being accustomed to see ing it and knowing Its contents an 1 what used for, took it up and drank some of it. It was not long before she too knew that strange feelings overcame her, and fearing she had made a mistake, orderd a servant to go for a doctor, aud also to Lady Lake and inform Miss Dr. Worcester what had befallen bei, aud to warn her of the contents *f the vial, which proved to be belladonna instead of valerian. Miss West went through the same fearful ordeal, but the presence and faithful work of the doctors brought her through to life again. The whole community was aroused miles around by the painful occur rence and spread of the news, aud every doctor within its range was summoned to the bed side of the suf. ferers and at one time supposed to be dying women. Another such a commotion as the one spoken of was never known in the history of Lady Lake. To Brace Up the system after "La Grippe,” pneu monia, fevers and other prostrating acute diseases; to build up needed flesh and strength, and to restore health and vigor wheu you feel “run down” and used-up, the best tiling in the world is Doctor Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. It promotes all the bodily functions, rouses every or gan into healthful action, purifies and enriches the blood, and through it cleanses, repairs and invigorates the the entire system. For the most stubborn scrofulous, skin or scalp diseases, dyspepsia, bil liousness and kindred ailments, the “Discovery is the only remedy that’s guaranteed. If it doesn’t benefit or cure you have your money back. Can you think of anything more convincing than the promise that is made by the proprietors of Dr. Sage’s Catarrh Remedy? It is this: “If we can’t cure your catarrh, we’ll pay you SSOO in cash. Look Well- Wm. B. Pabor, organizer and pro moter of the Lake Pabor settlement in DeSoto county and editor of the Pabor Pineapple Monthly, seeing a notice iu the Bauner that a party of Ocalians intended going to Honduras, wrote to this paper to warn our people against going to that country witiiout looking and considering well before they leaped. Mr. Pabor, before clos ing a location for his colony in DeSoto county, visited Honduras and spent considerable time there looking over the country and he says it does in no way compare with Florida. Latimore’a Last Day—A Gold Blooded Grime Avenged. In the hanging of Ben Lath; io this Thursday noon for the killin ' of N. A. Chandler, it may be a ell to re call the fact that on January 9ib, 1892, he shot paymaster Chandler without provocation and with a de termined and premeditated intent. Aud for what? Because, under the rules of the Ambler R. R. company, eighty cents of his wages were with held for a few days. Latlmore in sisted be was sick and had to go home and told some of the men of the camp that unless Chandler paid him the eighty cents “oue of them would eat breakfast in hades.” A short time after this the report of a pistol was beard, Chandler was found dead aud tbe negro who then w-nt under the alias of John Wil liams, bad disappeared. Six months later he was arrested in Jacksonville, brought to Ocala, tried and found guilty of murder and sentenced to be hung. Latlmore’s attorney, Geo. H. Bad ger, secured for his client anew trial, which took place before Judge Hooker iu November last and agtiu found guilty. This time the verdict of the jury was executed for an unprovoked and cold blooded murder as it should bave been lathe first sentence. The doomed man confessed change of heart to his spiritual advi-er, Fath er O’Riley, After receiving absolu tion he told jailer Charles Smith where he would find a saw that was smug gled in by a trusty for Ed Danny’s benefit, but of which he could make no use. It was secreted under the slab of the wash-stand. Deputy Ben McCollough, colored, sprang the trap at 12:30 p. m., aud fif teen minutes after Drs. Newsom and Izlar prouounced him dead. Before Latimore was swung into eternity, Revs. Goings and Nelson, two colored preachers, prayed with the condemned. Then he made a talk, the substance of which was he confessed the murder, was sorry for it, bad repented and told all of his race to take warning from his fate. He thanked each and every one who, in any way had tteen kiud to him and was especially grateful to jailer Smiih for his kiud treatmeut. Quite a crowd of country people were present aud as usual every point of vantage was secured to note the execution, every available space was taken up inside the inclosure und tbe jail. The skies were overcast with clouds and general gloom marked tk< tragic end. Cucumber, dill, Sweet and sour mixed pickles, Sauer kraut and Holland herrings At the Tea Pot. Going Up Higher. The Bauner learns with regret that Mr. Walter Hawkins, the obliginguud affable agent of the Florida Southern railroad in Ocala, has severed his con nection with that company and taken service under the Steamship Company and Central railroad of Georgia, with headquarters at Jack sonville. In making this move and severing his connections with the social and business world of Ocala he has done it with the greatest of reluctance, as he has formed acquaintances and friends here whom he Is loth to lose, but could not resist the tempting pecunia ry offer made him, which is double the salary received in his old position. The Banner congratulates Walter, and with his army of friends wish him the best of earth, which is none too good for so noble a specimen of manhood as is emboded iu Walter Hawkin’s make up. Senator Zeb Vance- This distinguished United States Senator from the Tar Heel state and liis truly accomplished wife passed through Ocala Sunday on the F. C. & P. fiyiug cracker on their way to Tampa Bay Hotel. When nearing Ocala he inquired how long the train would stop here. The answer was “five minutes ” Then the Senator said: “I’ll get oh it, and when I return home I’ll tell my bucolic constituents that I stood square on the Ocala Platform.” The remark created much merriment.
