death of Dr J F Smith at his home
in Saint Louis Mo He was the father

of Mrs W W Stripling of this city
and her friends here will sympathize
with her in her bereavement Dr Smith
was 73 years of age and had been
practicing medicine for over forty
years

creating a good deal of interest With

Reopens for the Balance of the Year
Best Year in Its HistoryMany
Improvements Being Made
At the regular hour Tuesday morn
ing the Ocala public school reopened
for the balance of the term after a
Christmas vacation of ten days
The teachers and children both en
joyed to the fullest extent their holi
day and have gone back to work with
renewed energy and vigor All of the
teachers and very nearly all of the
scholars were in their regular places
II at the opening hour and the prospects
I
I are very bright indeed for the next
five months of the session
Mr J H Workman the young prin
cipa of the school is an enthusiastic
an indefatigable worker and is doing
everything possible to make the Ocala
public school second to none in Flori
da and Florida has the best schools
in the South His heart and soul are
in the work and the improvements
I made since he came to Ocala have
I been very marked
During the summer the school board
I
had the two large rooms up stairs par
titioned off and their is now only one
grade in each of these rooms which
makes it very much more convenient
for the teachers and the scholars as
well
wellThe
The walls have all been done over
in two shades of green and new black
boards made the woodwork varnish
ed and the rooms are all exceedingly
neat and attractive
The school has just received and put
in during the holidays one hundred
new single desks These are in the
i > oms occupied by the seventh and
eighth grades which are taught by
Miss Hattie Dye and Miss Georgia
Boeger These new desks are a won
derful improvement and Mr Work
man hopes at no very distant date to
be able to secure single desks for all
the departments
The latest addition to the school is
I
its new library They now have
about five hundred dollars worth of
books The Elks it will be remember
ed gave to the school a large part of
the excellent library that they won
several months ago in the merchants
voting contest and the school already
had several hundred dollars worth 6f
histories reference books etc They
are having one of the small class
rooms in the rear of the building ex
cellently fitted up for their library It
will be a very cosy neat and pretty
room when completed The floor will
be covered the walls papered and the
room furnished with several Comfor
table chairs and the books will be kept
in the latest style sectional book
cases and in every way it will be a
splendid little library
Ocala is and certainly has every
right to be proud of her public school
and all of the teachers in this excellent
institution
A New Brick Block for Ocala
Ocala Is taking no step backward
The indications are that nineteen hun
dred and six will be a record breaking
year for building Among the build
Ings now regarded with some degree
of certainty are a new court house
and the new government building and
we are pleased also to say that Mr A
E Deloiiest will have a twostory
brick block erected on the west side
of the square where the New Racket
store is now located The architec
tural design of this block will be in
keeping with the buildings that have
made Ocala famous
Mr W B Camp a Jacksonville ar
chitect was in Ocala Monday con
sulting with Mr Delonest and will
draft the plans for the new block
Frederick Hocker who goes to
school in Virginia is visiting his
brother and sister Mr and Mrs Wil
liam Hocker
CITY FATHERS IN SESSION
The city council held its regular bi
monthly meeting Tuesday night
Those present were Messrs Gates
Ford Weathers Chace Carmichael
and Robertson

The meeting of the regular and
special sessions of the council were
approved
A communication from the Ocala
Evening Star and the Ocala Banner
asking the privilege of using an elec
tric current from the Smith and Spen
cer electric plant until the city is able
to supply such a current was referred
to the judiciary committee
A communication signed by Wart
man and Lytle for the placing of an
electric light in their locality second
ward was referred to the light com
mittee
Mrs Gary addressed a communica
tion to the council suggesting the ad
visability of erecting a line fence di
viding off the white and colored graves
in the old cemetery was read and re
ferred to the cemetery committee
W W Clyatt addressed a commu
nication in references to discrepancies
in the tax books which was read for
information
The building permit asked for by
Thomas Needham was npt granted
and D W Davis application for a
rebate on taxes met with the same
fate t

A communication from the water
company was read and placed on file
A resolution authorizing arid requir
ing the marshal to kill all dogs bitten
by mad dogs was passed
The ordinance regulating bur rooms
was read for the first time
Bnls aggregating a large amount
having been regularly approved by the
several committees were passsd
Reports of officer < vtfie referred to
appropriate committees
The telephone ordinance and the
paving of South Fourth and Wautula
streets South Seventh and Sagphez
streets and for placing electric lights
on corner of latter streets were passed
until the next meeting
Clerk Graham brought to the atten
tion of the council the condition of
the present ledger and asked that a
committee be appointed to go over the
same and balance it up and procure a
new ledger at the beginning of the
next official year which was done
The present board of alderman will
expire at the next meeting and the re I
I ports of officers and the books of the
city are being put in shipshape and
will be turned over to the next admin
istration in better condition than has I
been the case in many years
This leads us to say also that the
I
finances of the city present a very fine
showing and Ocala begins the new
year with flying colors

For several years Miss Robinson
worked for Mrs Bostick at Dunnellon
but for the past few years has owned
a millinery business of her own at
Warrenton Mr Henrick has made
his home at Crystal River for anum
ber of years and is employed in the
Cedar mills of that place
Mr Henrick and Miss Robinson met
by agreement in Ocala and were mar
ried here Mr Henrick then returned
to his work at Crystal River and Mrs
Henrick to Warrenton to dispose of
her business at that place and later on
will join her husband at Crystal Riv
er
Mrs J B Cureton Is at the Monte
zuma Hotel and will spend some time

The New Years Dance I
The young people enjoyed an infor
mal dance at the Armory Monday
night The weather was pleasant and
the evening was in every way d light
ful It was as largely attended as
was the Christmas dance and was
thoroughly enjoyable

Commissioners Meeting
The board of county commissioners
met Jn regular session Tuesday and
besides the routine business transact
ed quite a discussion was entered in
to anent the proposed new court
house It was finally decided to hold
a special meeting of the board next
Monday to meet the citizens of the
county and thoroughly discuss this
question
