of 1891 and 1S95 ti + hich killed to the

ed to emphasize the great importance
of securing hardy varities of these
fruits Experiments were started by I
the department and the results which I
have been obtained arevery valuable j
and encouraging It has been shown
I
that valuable hardy races can be pro I
I duced by crossing the very hardy cold 1
resisting trifoliate orange with the dif
ferent varities of the ordinary sweet

were found to produce valuable fruits

and southern Texas and regions of
low altitude in Arizona New Mexico
Y Washington and Oregon These fruits
r being different from any known group
of citrus fruit were named citranges
and the two varities distributed were
the Willits
The rusts citrange Is a beautiful
smooth round fruit with a reddish
flush being very similar In size and
appearance to the tangerine It makes
a good citrangeade similar t o the
lemonade and is especlaly valuable to
use for culinary purposes The Wil
lits citrange is more like a lemon in
appearance and quality it is to be
recommended for use in making cit
rangeade pies etc and may be serv
ed on occasion in the place of lemons
Both the rusks and the Willits cit
ranges are nearly seedless
= Pour other varities of hardy oranges
or citranges have been obtained each
j possessing special features of merit
One of these produces a fruit so sim
ilar in size and apijearanco to the or
r dinary orange that it can only be dis
tinguished by an expert This fruit
has been named the Morton The Mor
ton citrange produces an exceedingly
juicy fruit of the texture which is
almost totally seedless As in the
I
case of the rusks and the willits cit
ranges it makes a delightful cit
rangeade and can be used for cull
° nary purposes Trees of this variety
will be distributed to growers in the
spring of 1906
Another variety similar to the Mor
ton in appearance but different in
flavor and tree characters is also be
lieved to be valuable and will be prop I
ogated for the distribution as soon
of as possible
Within recent years the lime has be
come an important commercial fruit
but as yet the trees grown are mainly
sodllngs and the fruits are very vari

markets arc coming to demand fruits
of a certain size and it is desirable
that growers should plant varieties of
known characters Two new seedlings
f
producing fruit uniform in size and
of good quality have been secured in
i the departments experiments these I
i wlll receive nifmes and will be distrib I

these produces a small fruit and the
other a large fruit In both cases the
fruit is produced mainly near the ex

OCALA NEEDS IT BADLY
A Preparation That Lays DustIs
Used Successfully in California
After years of scientific research and
practical experiments Leonard Schade
Van Wcstrum the inventor of Wes
trumite claims to have finally suc
ceeded with the assistance of author
ities from the first rank in chemistry
and road building in producing a
chtmical compound which is solu
ble in water and which caan there
fore be easily distributed by means of
the ordinary water wagon The min
ute distribution which is thus possi
ble permits the compound to pene
trate through the pores of the finest
stone sand clay etc and its capac
ity of absorbing fresh water is said to
be sufficient to renew its binding ca
pacity after each rain whereby the
cracks due to the vibration of traffic
are closed as well as to lay the dust
which may be blown upon the track
from adjoining fields etc
The best results it is said will be
if the sandy or earthy surface is sat
urated to a depth of six inches with
a solution of from 25 to 50 per cent
Such saturation will amount to aUout
1500 per mile it is claimed to be suf
ficient to render the roadbed abso
lutely gree from dust for years and
to make the roadbed a compact elas
tic mass which will be able to with
stand the effects of rain storms etc
and prevent the losening of the rails
If after a period of several years
should make its reappearance to a
dust should make its appearance to a
slight degree this new dust can be
effectualy laid by sprinkling the sur
face with a solution of from 5 to 10
per cent which will cost from 20 to
540 per mile
In sections where it is merely nec
essary to lay the dust and no value
need be placed upon the solidity of
the roadbed applications of Westrum
Ite In a 10 per cent solution repeated
at intervals at six to ten times a
year and which will cost about 10
per mile per application will be suf
ficient to secure freedom from dust
Although Westrumite has not yet
been used to any extent for the above
purpose for the reasons that the duty
on oil makes its use for that purpose
in foreign countries prohibitive the
results which have been obtained
by its use on thousands of miles of
macadem and dirt roads seems to war
rant the assertion that it will be
equally effective for use on roadbeds
Two miles of the midway drive which
have for some time been treated with
Westrumite by the South Park Com
mlsioners of the city of Chicago
tend to indicate from the appearance
of the streets and the results obtained
in rendering it dust free and its sur
face hard and elastic that the state

FLORIDA FANCIES
The Courier office is in receipt of
an interesting and neatly printed book
bearing the title of Florida Fancies
written by F R Swift a New York

Knickerbocker press
In this little book the author tells
about the scenery and relates inter
esting adventures encountered on a
hunting trip along the St Johns and
Ocklawaha rivers The author did not
spend his time luxuriating in some
palatial hotel but went out into the
wilds where he could enjoy our incom
parable scenery
He also tells about the mt i sic of thej
Florida evening which commence
with the shrill call of the coot the
scream of the blue heron and the trol
ley trill of the raft duck the weird
whispers of the hoot and the hoarse
cry of the alligator which he was
obliged to listen to as in many in
stances he was not able to leave the
yacht for several days as everything
for miles was swamps and lakes

THE POOR JEW
t
I An account of the terrible suffer
i ings of the Jews in Russia which we
I find described in our evening paper
I recalls an incident in our law prac
I tice many years ago
A good deacon in Vermont had
heard so much said by his pastor
about the wicked Jews that his sym
t
i pat I l1es were aroused and when he
died and his will was opened it was
found that he had left five hundred
dollars to the poor Jews The exe
cutor of the will wrote me and asked
me to find some poor Jews in Bos
t ton I employed a man to make a
careful search and was compelled to
write the executor that we could not
find a poor Jew in Boston This was
something over forty years ago and
there were few Jews in our city and
they were all prosperous We believe
the money was sent to some society
in New York
f A frind asks us why the Jews are
so terribly persecuted in Russia and
we answer that we do not know un
less it is the Russian way of con
verting Jews into Russian Christians
t We remember reading how a very
wicked Irishman when making his
final confession to the priest just be
fore dying related so many crimes
that the priest asked him if he had
never done a good thing in his life
I And he said that he had done one
good thing The priest asked him what
it was and he said I convarted a
Jew How did you convert him
said the priest Well I had him out
wid me in a boat and I axed him
would he be a Christian and he said
he wouldnt be a Christian so I put
him over the side of the boat and
put his head under water a bit and
i then when I let him up I axed him
would he be a Christian and he said
i he wouldnt so then I put his head
under water a longer bit and when I
let him up I axed him would he be
i a Christian and he said he would be
a Christian and so I convarted him
I But how do you know > said the
I
j priest that he remained converted
Oh I put his head under the water
I the third time that he might die in
I
j the faith
I This seems very similar to the plan
I adopted of conveting Russian Jews
1
into Russian Christians
I
In this connection we remember that
I when investigating the cattle question
some years ago we found by what
I seemed to be reliable statistics that
I in various European countries Jews
lived on the average about five years
I
longer than Christians which was sup
posed to result somewhat from the
I
great care taken by the Jews to eat
J only the meats of perfectly healthy
animals
I
We believe that the Jews take great
pains in this respect and that Jewish
dealers in meats never put into their
i
meats for the purpose of preserving
I
them formaldehyde or other poisons
as is done we fear by not a few of
I
our socalled Christion dealers

Royalty to do Honor to Miss Roosevelt i
iI
It will probably not be very long I
I
before the date will be set for the
marriage of Miss Alice Roosevelt and
Representative Nicholas Longworth
It is genorally understood it will take
place in February the 16th and 17th
being mentioned as probable dates
While the period of the engagement
is passing pleasantly and as in all
cases is rosetinted with romance at
the same time it is not likely that it
will be prolonged but a suitable time
should be given to those who expect
to send wedding presents It is safe
to say that the White House has never
contained such a collection of gifts as
will be received by Miss Roosevelt
More than any other President Mr
Roosevelt has been before the world
The United States is on terms of am
ity with all nations civilized and un
civilized and while Miss Roosevelt is
not a reigning princess from the
nature of her relationship to her dis
tinguished father she is the nearest
approach to such in this country
Therefore it is understood that the
rulers of foreign nations will tale the
position that in sending her a wedding
present they are honoring her father
and the country of which he is the
chief executive
Prince Henry of Prussia has been
entertained by the president as has
Prince Louis of Battenberg and others
It is therefore reasonable to presume
that the rulers of England and Ger
i many will be among those sending
presents as well as Prince Henry and
Prince Louis The good offices of the
president in bringing about peace be
tween Russia and Japan will doubt
less be recognized by the Czar and
the Mikado on this occasion It is
reported that the Kings of Italy and
Spain the Sultan of Turkey and the
Emperor of Austria have also declar
ed their intention of sending gifts to
I
Miss Roosevelt while President Lou
bet of France our great sister re
public has already ordered two mag
nificent Sevre vases Pope Pius 10th
has signified his intention of sending
a handsome wedding present probably
a piece of Mosaic from the Vatican
factory
The announced intention that the
European rulers will remember the
I occasion in this pleasant way may
i
i have considerable bearing on the man
j ner in which the wedding ceremony is
to be performed It is to be expected
that if the Czar Kaiser and the others
send presents they will be personally
presented by the representatives of
their country in Washington Such
I being the case it would follow that
i he should be invited in behalf of his
I sovereign to attend the wedding At I
the same time it would be scarcely I
I proper to invite those diplomats whose I
I sovereigns had given presents and i 1
j leave out those from countries not so j
thoughtful and therefore if a few are i
invited because of their official posi
tion it may be determined to invite
them all This would give the wedding i
I a decidedly official complexion and un Ii
less a number of high officials of this
I
country are also invited it would lead
tj many heartburnings Miss Roose
I velt will probably receive gifts from i
almost every one of high official posi j
tion in this city and hundreds of oth
i
ers throughout the country in addi j
tion to those her 1
sending presents es I
pecially those in this city will expect r
invitations to the wedding which
I
promises to be a very large affair t
She has received her engagement
ring which has replaced the single
sapphire which she wore while the
new ring was j being made I It is set
with three pigeonblood rubies sur
rounded by diamonds Miss Roosevelt
has never worn much jewelry but af
ter her wedding she will have a hand
some supply from which to choose
