cuit met at Martel Friday and after I
organizing made an assessment of six I
hundred dollars for the support of
the pastor and apportioned it to the j
several appointments of the circuit j
They also arranged for raising sixty

dollars for repairs on the parsonage
and water connection from the tank
of the mill to the parsonage hy
drants I
The deliberations of the stewards I
and the pastor were unusually harI
monious and all left realizing how
good and pleasant it is for brethren
to live and dwell together in unity
The appointments were arranged for I

on and Inglis end and 5th Sundays

Martel circuit arrived at Martel on
December 29 without notice He
preached an impressive sermon at
Martel Sunday evening to an appre
ciative audience
Monday night the people of Martel
vent en masse to the parsonage car
trying valuable donations of neces
sariec and luxuries in sufficient quan
tities to supply the pantry with an
abundance until the stewards can get
things arranged on a selfsustaining
i ask The pastor and family have
1 made a good impression upon their
Iparishoners and were delighted with
the ordial welcome extended to
them on their arrival

at Martel on Friday next at 1000 a

I to this place we are told again that
the road will be built as soon as laborers

Silver Springs Lumber company and
the principal promoter of this new
route is exceedingly anxious to get

lected for the mill is on the south
side of a beautiful clear water lake
contiguous to as fine a body of pine
timber as can bf found in the state
The people are jubilant over the
prospect of at least getting an out

lit is claimed and justly so too that
the lands of this section are as well
j adapted to the raising of early veg
etables I as any portion of east Flor
ida It has been fairly demonstrated
that cabbage lettuce tomatoes beans
and strawberries do grow to perfection

will resume operations as soon as the

the old ring in the new A heavy
mist hung over the sleeping town
through it the lights flared like a
dreary dawn I had forgotten that it
was New Years eve and my first
thought was that the
burglar alarm i
on the state treasury valt had gone
off then other bells began to ring I
went to my window and looked out
on the night The mist veiled the
light of the moon and stars and even
of the street lights half a block away
At the corner one solitary man was
firing cannon crackers while the bells
I
pealed in half a dozen keys Hap
py New Year Friend some passer
called to the man with the cannon
crackers Then only did I remember
that the old year had gone back to the
God who gave it and 1907 stood
newborn on the rim of time
The week at the capital was one of
more than usual interest socially

afternoon card party and again at

was in the nature of a farewell en
tertainment to the men with whom

the capital during the four years he
has served on the railroad commis
sion and was a very pleasant affair
Mr Brown is a thoroughly genial
and delightful host and his stag sup
per was a graceful rounding out of
his term of office in Tallahassee
Sunday Mr Browne will go to Vir
ginia where he will enter his son
Joe in school M s Browne and Miss
Susan Browm viH remain in Talla
hassee until his return a week later
and will then go to Key West to
live
Commissioner McLin of the depart
ment of agriculture who has charge
of the state prison department has
received in response to his request
for a report of the observance of
Christmas at the various convict
camps an interesting budget of re
ports
The lessees are required to give
the convicts a holiday on Christmas
day The reports show in a number
of instances that they were given two
days and at one camp from Saturday
to Wednesday
At one camp tIlt convicts had a
Christmas ire and at another a min
strel performance One captain re
ported that each state convict wns
given cue dollar and each county con
vict fifty cents in cah At another
camp thirtyeight uotlars in cash was
distributed among the convicts
At all camps Zi gooi dinner as

ple and cigars were distributed as
a treat

The conditions of the state con
victs as compared with that of the
count convicts would convince any
one that under the system under
which the state convicts are leased
i it is impossible for such abuses to
j exist as have come to light in many
i instances under the county leases
The policy of the board of state in
stitutions has been to secure for un
fortunates humane treatment The
I system of supervision and inspec
i tion makes it impossible for any con
i vict to suffer ill treatment for any
I length of time Sufficient shelter

care and treatment for
the sick are
required of the lessees
Mr McLin has given years of time
and thought to the study of this
problem He is naturally a man of
largo heart and human sympathy and
he gives his
personal supervision to
the prison work Dr S H Blitch
who is the hospital
physician is a
man of such tender sympathy that
all sick and suffering humanity be
it convict or pauperis his special
charge Hon N A Blitch supervisor
of convicts whose term as railroad
j commissioner will begin next week
ji has been a fine man for his work Dr
Lamar medical advisor and Mr Clark
assistant supervisor are men with
= special qualifications for the positions

of property in Florida is on the ass
essment roll of Dade and St Johns
counties where the great East Coast
hotel properties are located
