185 The •!'••1 i •&<'• I PSi f# F' .•iffi 11 IP*® Bowbells Tribune on Friday of each Burke County, N. D., by Entth££tottS?at at Bowbells, B. A. STEFONOWICZ July 24. 1908, at Bowbells, N. Dak., under the act of March 3. 1879. Subscription Rates To any point in U. S., per year $1.50 To Canada, per year, in advance 2.00 COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER Don't admit you do your best unless you do pretty well. Bowbells second trunk line should double the city's advan tages. The high jcost of politics is the most conspicuous exhibit in that line this year. Harvest of barley and oats will start in Burke county in a very short time. The chief difference between a success and a failure is that the success has kept right on trying. A baker claims Mr. Rockefel ler owes him a bill of 56 cents. Well, what of it? He ought to know that no amount is too small for Mr. Rockefeller to save. North Dakota progressives have left the republican party, but only for a short time. They will soon see their folly and get back to their former moorings. The proposed decrease in the size of paper money bills will probably not be popular. They are scarcely not large enough to cover our current expenses as it is. What are Burke county far mers going to do when twine is unobtainable at any price? From the looks of things such will be the case before the harvest is over. A unique instance of the un selfish desire to give others plea sure is afforded bv a nature couple in Pennsylvania, who will take the groom's six children and two grand children on their honeymoon trip. A woman i n Massachusetts was held as demented because she donned trousers. But if every woman is so held who wears the breeches there is go ing to be a great breaking up of homes of the country. A Pittsburg man has invented anesthetic bullet which puts vic tims into a sweet, dreamless sleep while it kills. The inven tor expects to take the tar out of the class where General Sher man put it, by making it quite a painless performance. An ex-bandit and member of Jesse James gang had his pock ets picked of nearly a hundred dollars while listening to a Chau tauqua lecture given by Wm. Bryan. This holds the record the way of irony of fate. in A girl has sent a petition to Congress to change her name. This may be taken as a general invitation to the national legis lature for one of its unattached members to respond to the femi nine privilege of leap year. Hunted 2,000 miles through trackless wilds by the Canadian mounted police, a noted cattle thief and all-around criminal has been taken. It would be a good idea to bring some of these en ergetic policemen to the appar ently hopeless maze o city streets where criminals escape so easily. A defaulting county treasurer in Illinois was paroled on condition that he repay the money taken, in installments, the court giving him, at the installment rate, over 150 years to pay the total sum. If he does not pay it in the given time probably the con siderate law will take mpre dras tic measures with him. The latest of freak dances is the horse trot. In this day of polital interest why not the don key drag, the moose minuet or the elephant love waltz? The average voter likes to see a political scrap, but he gener ally continues voting in the same old way and so in November we can look for about the usual re sults. Bill Bryan is being condemned because he once posed for a pho tograph while shaking hands with Charles Murphy. But if an x-ray photograph had been tak en it would have revealed an ax in his hip pocket. That youth is not necessarily a matter of years, despite Osler ian theory, is proven by a Phila delphia woman, who at the age of seventy-four is not only pre paring to wed, but is about to take a trip to Europe to do it. The governor of New York was stopped in a town of that state for speeding, and with ro man virtue of the police head of the town says the governor must either stand trial or pay a fine for violating the local regulations, as no position or influence can excuse a man for breaking the law. This dictum must have been received in the metropolis with something of a gasp. Since the Hoyt brothers of the Flaxton Times purchased the Portal International early last spring and one of the boys went up to fun it, both publications have been greatly benefitted by the deal. Both the International and the Times are a great credit to the towns in which they are published and are improving right along. The business men of the two towns are showing their appreciation by very liber al patronage and the Hoyt boys certainly deserve the many good things that are coming their way. They are hustlers and have proven that it takes hustle to win. ONE MAN AND A JUDGE The aged bankrupt whose es tate had been tied up in a court for 13 years and who wrote an offensive letter to Federal Judge Emory Speer had other reme dies. So also had the judge, who immediately caused the old gentleman's arrest for contempt. In the letter reference was made to many things in the ca reer of the judge which are mat ters of record. If they were merely insinuations they might have been ignored. If they were libelous there are laws in Geor gia, no doubt, that comprehend them. If for any reason not of strict necessity the magistrate permitted a Bankruptcy pro ceeding to drag along for 13 years, he might properly enough have accepted the protest as an irregular but a merited rebuke. The time is highly inopportune for summary arrests and punish ments for contempt or for judic ial oppression of any other kind. It was one man's grievance that set a committee of the house of representatives to Seattle to in vestigate .Judge Hanford, who has since resigned. It 'was one man's complaint of injustice that drew the attention of the house to Judge Archbald, of Pennsyl vania, who has since been im peached. BUILDING A ROAD Another illustration of the gen eral recognition of the value of good roads, and the determina tion to have them, is afforded by the action of the citizens of Rav enden Springs, Arkansas, and surrounding country in closing all stores and offices eight hours each day for a week in order that all hands might turn out and build a pike road from Ravenden Springs to Ravenden, a station on the Frisco, a distance of nine miles, without a cent of cost to the county. The building of the road is under the supervision of an experienced road engineer, and assurance is given that ev erything done will be substan tial and permanent. Business men, preachers, lawyers, doe tors, and people of other walks of life represented in the terri tory involved, are joining in the work, giving freely of their time and energies. This is not the first instance within the last year or two of a whole commun ity turning road builders and do nating time and effort to the construction of a desired road. It is a measure which may nqt be necessary in many communi ties, and fortunate are they but the fact that it is forthcoming in places where it does seem necessary or advisable is a grat ifying commentary on the civic spirit of American citizenship. KNOW YOUR CITY A city, with a few natural ad vantages thrown in as a starter, would very likely follow the ex ample of the immortal Topsy, and just grow. But in the cities that are growing fastest and most methodically there seems to be a considerable amount of taking thought about the grow ing. There is a widely enter tained belief that the growth of a city industrially and correc tively in wealth and population can be helped along considerably by judicially directed effort. In several of the Middlewest cities, where the striving for the bigger and better things goes on for ever, they have organized know your-city movements. There ought to be such a move ment inaugurated here in Bow bells, first, for the reason that every patriotic citizen should be well informed concerning every thing that pertains to the native or adopted city. To know Bow bells well means a comprehensive knowledge of the city's educa tional institutions, of her great commercial advantages, of the variety and extent of the prod ucts raised in the territory ad jacent to her, of the geography and typography, the markets, amusements and a score of other phases and features. Having acquired an accurate and expansive knowledge of the home town, the inquirer will be in a much better position to ren der the civic service which every good citizen owes to his home community. In a comprehensive study of the city a knowledge will be obtained concerning the shortcomings and imperfections. Attention will be directed to the lines of progress along which other cities are moving more rapidly than Bowbells. By studying the home situation, and only so, shall we make intelligent progress.
