There is talk that the Great Northern intends tearing (town the coal shed built at the foot of Main street, and erect a new 20-pocket coal house farther west, near the present round-house. Tbe new building will be so constructed as to deliver coal to engines on the main track on one side, and to engines oper ating on aside track at tbe other sidfc. This will leave tbe main track practi cally free and unobstructed. John L. Clements and his wife, for merly of Towner, but who are now liv ing on a ranch'near tbe month of the While Earth river, came up Irom Chil cott last Monday. This was Mrs. Clem ents' first risit to Williston, and she is aa delighted with tbe place that she in tends making John buy a lot and build here, so they ean have a winter resi dence in tbe city, and ayail themselves of tbe opportunity for educating their children. The Ninors gave one of their unique and pleasing entertainments at Odd Fellow*' ball lust Friday evening. Tbe attendance was not large, but the per formance was appreciated by every lover of the dramatic art. A Boom in Population. Perhaps no town of its size in tbe state of North Dakota is growing so rapidly in point of population as Wil liston. Last Friday evening, Sept. 15, 1890, was one of the most eventful days in the history of our thriving little city, and the Graphic takes great pleasure in recording tbe fact that on that date the birth of two bouncing baby girls, one to Mr. and Mrs. John Heffernan, and one to Mr. and Mrs. James Costello. Haying in this section is nearly through with. Chicago, Sept. 15, 1899. Dear Sir:—Receiptsofrangegrasscattle about 14,000 bead this week. Prices have beea-as high as any time this year. It looks like we will have good markets on all classes of range stock this season. Very few cattle from North and South Dakota and Montana are stopping at "between stations" for sale on account of the low rate. It will not cpst the shippers more than $24.00 per car to come direct to Chicago, and get te bene fit of the best cattle market in the United States. If you will stop and figure tbe difference in fayor of the Chicago markets than Chicago, prices it often makes a difference in fayor of the Chicago market from $75.00 to $L25iOG' per car, after paying all expenses- by coming on to Chicago.. Within the last three- weoRs Chicago prices on cows and fat steers have been 30 to 60 cents per hundred higher than the markets that quote a few of their top sales, but do not give any of tbe poorer sales, which are in the majority. That kind of work is misleading to ship pers. We are not getting enough good feeders here for tbe demand rand that class of cattle are selling this week higher than any time this year. Some choice Montana beef steers sold this week at $5.35 to $5.40, weighing 1,350 to 1,450 lbs. The bulk of tbe good steers $5.00 to $5.25. Fat cows and heifers $4.25 to. $4.50. Choice seeders $4.75 to $5.00. Good feeders $4.60 to $4.75. Yourn very truly, LEW W. ALLENBEKG, Minneapolis, Sept. 18.—Charles A. The Mississippi has in the course of ages transported from the mountain? and high land within its drainace area sufficient material to make 400,000 square miles of new land by filling up an estuary whicli extended from its original outfall to the Gulf of Mexico for a length of 500 miles, and in width from 30 to 40 miles. This river, says Longman's Magazine, is still pouring solid matter into the gulf, where it is spread out in a fun-like shape over a coast line of 150 miles, and is filling up at the rate of i02,000,000 tons a year, or six times as much soil as was removed in the construction of the Manchester ship canal, and .sufficient to make a square mile of new land, allowing for it having to fill up the gulf to a depth of^O yards. Some idea of the vastness- of this operation may be conceived when the fact is considered that some of this soil lias to be transported- more than 3,000 miles and that if the whole of it had to be carried on boats at the lowest rate at which heavy material is carried on the inland waters of America, or, say, for one-tenth of a penny per ton per mile over an average of half the total distance, the cost would be no less a sum than £23S,000,000 a year. Through the vast delta thus formed the river winds its way, twisting and turning by innumerable bends until it extends its length to nearly 1,200 miles, or more than double the point-to-point length' of the delta, continually eroding the banks in 'one placc and building up land in another, occasionally breaking its way across a narrow neck which lie6 between the two extremeties and fillinc UD the old channel.
